Condolences

Condolence From: Kay Dimmell
Condolence: I just finished reading the book ‘From the ashes of my dreams’. I loved the humour and I cried for the challenges faced by your family. Most importantly, I celebrated the love story written throughout the pages. Marion and family, accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of a very special man and the love story of a very special family.

Condolence: To Marion and Family.
So sorry to have heard of Ed's passing even though my condolence is a few months late. I remember Ed's Mom and Dad. the Rev. Alex and Maisie Penney Smith, as well as his sister Pat, Mrs. William Kean of St. John's, very well as they were at Gambo in the 1960's. I even remember Ed's grandparents of whom I fondly called Nan and Pop Penney as my own died long before my birth. Spent a lot of time with this family and was quite affected when the Rev. left Gambo and moved to Musgrave Harbour to be that town's Reverend. I have nothing but beautiful memories of them all. Thinking of you and your wonderful family at this terrible time.

Condolence: My father (Johnson Pelley) was Ed's first cousin. I got to know this amazing man, through his wonderful daughter Jennifer. It will be a little less bright in the world with him gone. Rest assured, however, there will be laughter echoing from above with his contagious humour and kindness. Much love to you all. James, Arlene and Family

Condolence: To Marion and the Smith family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ed's passing this past weekend, and I wanted to add my sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers to you and the family even in the days to come because life certainly won't be the same without him. I felt blessed to have known Ed and found him to be a great encouragement to me as a musician so many times during my hosting of various music events, recitals, etc. that he always attended in support of Samantha and Robyn, in particular. The town of Springdale and province of NL has undoubtedly lost one of its great citizens and he will surely be missed by all who knew and enjoyed his contributions throughout the years! You all have many great memories to cherish for sure, and may they richly sustain you all in these coming days.

Sincerely,
Clara

Condolence: Marion and family
When I heard of Ed's passing, I was overcome with memories. I know him as my past teacher, principal, and friend. Always a welcome smile when we met, whether on the side of the road or at the trade show in Springdale. I have pictures that I have that were taken when I was a student at Grant Collegiate and him the principal.
Rest assured he lived his life to the fullest, something we will all try to attain, but few accomplish. He will be sadly missed.

Condolence: Marion and family; so sorry to hear of Ed's passing; it's been many years since our paths crossed, but I remember Alex and Maisie stopping by Mom & Dad's place (Doug/Mary Green) on many occasions and discussion on the family was always forefront. May your faith, love and memories sustain all of you in the days ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Condolence: Ed influenced me as a writer even before I pursued writing in my teens. After I began my journey down a literary road, Ed became a mentor. I enjoyed listening to him advise me like a father holding his newborn child. He was always more than ready and willing to pass on his wealth of knowledge to anyone thirsty for it. I was first published as a columnist in the nor' wester and I still remember the overwhelming joy at being a fellow columnist in the same newspaper ans Ed. As a writer, Ed Smith was a hero to me as a young writer. His influence on me as a writer will always be a part of me. I think he may also be partly responsible for my "unique" sense of humour. I will miss him.

Condolence: Marian and Ed came to Springdale in 1972," intending to stay one year". It was Ed's turn to host the district principal's supper at his house, but to Marian's horror, the stove broke, and there would be no supper. But the dessert was other worldly; Ed moved to the fore with his masterly, enraptured storytelling.

One year turned into a lifetime; Ed had discovered the heart and soul of Nfld., and Nfld. found its story teller. We are all stronger, prouder today because this kind, gentle man has woven his magic genius lovingly through all of our being.
