Condolence: I just finished reading the book ‘From the ashes of my dreams’. I loved the humour and I cried for the challenges faced by your family. Most importantly, I celebrated the love story written throughout the pages. Marion and family, accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of a very special man and the love story of a very special family.

Condolence From: Roderick Brentnall
Condolence: To Marion and Family. So sorry to have heard of Ed's passing even though my condolence is a few months late. I remember Ed's Mom and Dad. the Rev. Alex and Maisie Penney Smith, as well as his sister Pat, Mrs. William Kean of St. John's, very well as they were at Gambo in the 1960's. I even remember Ed's grandparents of whom I fondly called Nan and Pop Penney as my own died long before my birth. Spent a lot of time with this family and was quite affected when the Rev. left Gambo and moved to Musgrave Harbour to be that town's Reverend. I have nothing but beautiful memories of them all. Thinking of you and your wonderful family at this terrible time. Roderick Brentnall Toronto, Ont.

Condolence: My father (Johnson Pelley) was Ed's first cousin. I got to know this amazing man, through his wonderful daughter Jennifer. It will be a little less bright in the world with him gone. Rest assured, however, there will be laughter echoing from above with his contagious humour and kindness. Much love to you all. James, Arlene and Family

Condolence: To Marion and the Smith family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ed's passing this past weekend, and I wanted to add my sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers to you and the family even in the days to come because life certainly won't be the same without him. I felt blessed to have known Ed and found him to be a great encouragement to me as a musician so many times during my hosting of various music events, recitals, etc. that he always attended in support of Samantha and Robyn, in particular. The town of Springdale and province of NL has undoubtedly lost one of its great citizens and he will surely be missed by all who knew and enjoyed his contributions throughout the years! You all have many great memories to cherish for sure, and may they richly sustain you all in these coming days. Sincerely, Clara

Condolence: Marion and family When I heard of Ed's passing, I was overcome with memories. I know him as my past teacher, principal, and friend. Always a welcome smile when we met, whether on the side of the road or at the trade show in Springdale. I have pictures that I have that were taken when I was a student at Grant Collegiate and him the principal. Rest assured he lived his life to the fullest, something we will all try to attain, but few accomplish. He will be sadly missed.

Condolence From: Dominic S. Winsor
Condolence: Ed influenced me as a writer even before I pursued writing in my teens. After I began my journey down a literary road, Ed became a mentor. I enjoyed listening to him advise me like a father holding his newborn child. He was always more than ready and willing to pass on his wealth of knowledge to anyone thirsty for it. I was first published as a columnist in the nor' wester and I still remember the overwhelming joy at being a fellow columnist in the same newspaper ans Ed. As a writer, Ed Smith was a hero to me as a young writer. His influence on me as a writer will always be a part of me. I think he may also be partly responsible for my "unique" sense of humour. I will miss him.

Condolence: Marian and Ed came to Springdale in 1972," intending to stay one year". It was Ed's turn to host the district principal's supper at his house, but to Marian's horror, the stove broke, and there would be no supper. But the dessert was other worldly; Ed moved to the fore with his masterly, enraptured storytelling. One year turned into a lifetime; Ed had discovered the heart and soul of Nfld., and Nfld. found its story teller. We are all stronger, prouder today because this kind, gentle man has woven his magic genius lovingly through all of our being. Jim Saunders

Condolence From: Bruce White
Condolence: To Marion and the family, please accept my deeply felt condolences over the passing of Ed. Ed was an inspirational leader who challenged us all, who had the privilege of working with him, to strive to great heights and to look to the human side of every issue - to always keep a personal perspective and a sense of humor. Likewise, he was a colleague, who understood the value of people and knew that when you give respect, respect returns to you many times over. But beyond all this, Ed was an intellect who loved to question and be questioned. He strived to be outside the mental box in which far too many of us take comfort. He relished challenging and being challenged; considering vastly divergent ideas which challenged his world view. He enjoyed looking at distant mental landscapes and pondering possibilities. Again, my deepest condolences over your tremendous loss.

Condolence From: Wayne & Joan Penney
Condolence: Sincere condolences to family and friends on Ed's passing. He so gently touched so many lives, including ours, in so many ways. As a teacher and humanitarian, Ed exhibited so well the old adage that "People don't care about how much you know until they know how much you care." The response to his presence at the Gander Collegiate 50th Anniversary Reunion was a testimony to that. Surely a life to be, not only celebrated, but also imitated. God bless. Wayne & Joan Penney

Condolence: Aunt Marian, Michelle, Kathy, Jennifer and Rob, I don't think I have the words to express how I have been feeling for all of you and the rest of the family over the past week. I can only imagine how difficult it is to have lost Uncle Ed. He will be missed by many more than you know! There are lots of great memories of our family times together and more recently, visits in Toronto, Springdale and Burlington - sadly a number of years ago now. Still, time passing doesn't change the closeness I feel. I'm sorry I can't be with you all to celebrate the wonderful life lived by Uncle Ed, but we will be with you in spirit, thought and prayer. Love, Nancy

Condolence: To Marian and Family, So sorry to hear of Ed's passing! Our friendship goes back many years, when he was a student minister in the United Church of Canada and officiated at a family burial Service and later staying at our home during times of performing musical concerts with my sister in law, the late Patricia Melindy. Ed was a man of many talents and and a striking personality, which portrayed a gentleman of caring, compassion, courage, humour and a great faith. May you be comforted by the special memories that will last forever and the love and caring of your family and friends. Love and prayers to all!

Condolence: I was sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Smith. I always read and enjoyed his columns. Although I did not know Mr. Smith personally, I did speak to him on the phone one time. When Mr. Smith had his accident I joined him up in the Association of the Miraculous Medal. Non-Catholics as well as Catholics can join this Association. There are many prayers and Masses offered for the member every year. I called to tell him and asked him if he minded me doing this. He didn't, and said he had never heard of the Association of the Miraculous Medal but that a few extra prayers wouldn't hurt. He seemed like a very nice man. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Kindest regards.

Condolence: Deepest sympathy to all members of the family. I can only imagine the loss that is yours as you mourn the passing of such a great man. I came to know his value as he and I were colleagues first in education and later as Board members in Health care. His contributions in all areas were immense as was always his interest in all things that mattered most. Newfoundland has lost an invaluable citizen. May he rest in peace as he lived the same way.

Condolence From: Shirley Locke Moores
Condolence: Marion and family, There are no words to express my great sadness at Ed's death. I have treasured your friendship for more than than fifty years and have a deep admiration for you both.I relished each of Ed's excellent contributions to the body of Newfoundland humour and chuckled over his incomparable ability to skew political pomposity. He never took himself too seriously and although he was a proud Newfoundlander to the core, he took great pleasure in poking gentle fun at some of our most cherished traditions showing us that it is OK to laugh at ourselves. But the greatest lesson Ed taught me was how to live graciously with serious adversity. He was living proof that faith in God can sustain when we place our trust in Him. Marion, our family was so touched that you and Ed came to church during our recent reunion visit. I regretted that time constraints prevented us from a longer visit but it was so good to see you both. Carl joins me in praying for you and your family. I pray that you will take solace from your memories, comfort from the support of family and friends and strength from your strong faith. God bless you, my friend. Love, Shirley

Condolence From: Clayton Handrigan
Condolence: Marion & family: For many years you and Ed were a very important part of my life. I have so many great memories and warm thoughts of the happy times we shared together. Ed's loving and giving nature, his humour, his strong character, and his talents were always things that I admired about him. Space does not permit a listing of the many things I remember, but removing spark plug wires from his own car so I would be embarrassed driving away from my own wedding, fishing with him and his father, their code word for cigarettes, visits to Gander, & sitting with him at night at the Miller Centre are just a few. Simple words cannot convey the deep feeling of sadness and the sorrow I feel for all of you at this sad time. I am so very sorry for your loss. I pray that the faith in God that you and Ed hold dear, will now see you through this terrible adversity. God bless you all.

Condolence: Marion and Family Pat and Bill We convey our condolences with deep feeling.Ed, through his "body of work" and personal friendship, has been a part of our lives ever since our Twillingate and Mt. Allison days.In many ways he was 'the soul of NL" in his love for this place and its people, in his appreciation for life outdoors, and his solid defence of our way of life, but also for his social justice conscience. Add his courage and determination to that mix with his love of family and you have "quite a man!"Our only consolation is that he will continue to speak eloquently through the written word for years to come, God Bless!

Condolence: Our hearts are heavy today as we share in the loss of a dear friend. Ed and I go back to when we were just starting our informative years-10-13.He was a lot older than me but I guess when you are 10 3 months is a lot and he always found ways to reminder me. Our families became one and this friendship continued forever. The accidents and illnesses we shared as we grew more matured. During his stay at the Miller Centre our lives again intertwined as we shared our musical talents. Ed's more than mine. His articles in the "View from Here" gave me another chance to relive our fond memories. If there is a bright spot to our loss it is that his sufferings is over and we can continue to share our memories. Our condolences to all the family and his many friends and our prayers are with you all.

Condolence: My heartfelt condolences to Marian (Ed's beloved OH) and the entire family. From my high school graduation in 1989, when Ed was our guest speaker, to the last 17 years working with him on Downhome - and all of his books and columns in between - Ed's words of wisdom and, certainly, humour have been part of my life. Whether we talked in person, over the phone or over the Internet, I could be sure that boyish twinkle in his eye would appear as he tried to pull a little joke on me. He was so quick with his wit, he kept me on my toes. I feel blessed to have known Ed Smith, Downhome was all the more interesting with his commentary, and all of us who worked with and appreciated Ed will miss him.

Condolence From: Daphne & Ed Blandford
Condolence: Marion, Rob, Michelle & family, Kathy & family, Jennifer and family, Pat and family;- "The view from here" hasn't been very bright since we rec'd the sad news Friday of the passing of our dear friend, Ed. Our friendship goes back many years, ever since you moved to Springdale and our family is grateful for that relationship we have fostered. There are no words of ours to adequately express the sadness we feel as we mourn the loss of our friend and we know that you, as his family, his many friends, his church family, his town and the province also sadly mourn Ed's passing. He certainly lived his life as fully as his limitations allowed and was never one to give in or give up because of them. Ed was well known to have the right words for every situation in which he found himself and these were always spoken in love and with sincerity. They brought much joy and strength to many, for whom they were spoken. Each member of our family was delighted to have had the opportunity to see Ed when we were home in late August, and what a blessing that was!! We know you all have your own special memories of him which you can hold on to and cherish in your heart, which death cannot erase. They should give you much comfort in the coming days; lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are loved and cared about. Be assured of our continued love and prayers as you go through the days ahead, especially on Monday when you lay Ed to rest. He fought a great fight and he kept the faith for sure! In Love, Daphne & Ed

I knew him well as Assistant Supt. of the Green Bay Integrated School Board when I was principal of Crescent Elementary school. I also met him on many occasions when he was principal of Grant Collegiate, Springdale. He was a great friend and colleague, well known for his wit and humor. Cherish the wonderful memories you have of your loved one.

Condolence: Mrs Smith and family, although I have never met Ed in person seems like everyone knew him from school, (I didn't) to writing for Downhome magazine, That's where I got to learn so much about him and his family. Most of his articles always brought a chuckle for he knew how to always bring a smile to some one elses face even while fighting his own battles. He is now resting in eternal peace where he has no more pain. I am sure he will be greatly missed for I will miss his articles in Downhome. First thing I said was well I don't see any more reasons to buy that magazine, and although I will continue to buy them it well never be the say.I never did get to to buy either of his books but I wanted to. Hug all your many memories of your loved one, and know others share in your lose today. RIP Mr Smith.

Condolence: To Marion, children, and grandchildren, as well as Pat and Bill, Our hearts are shattered today on hearing that our friend Ed had died. Our friendship goes back over 50 years when his father Alex became UC Minister in Gambo. There was nothing better for both of us that to appear at some speaking engagement together, when both of us got the chance to take a good-natured strip off each other. Our encounters over the years will remain in the stories I relate. Today, a magnificent light has gone out. Till we meet again, good friend

Condolence: It was with sadness that we heard of Ed's passing. For everyone, especially family, he was a true inspiration. We remember many times shared together with Ed and family and Uncle Max and Aunt Maizie. A prevailing tone of humor and story telling was always there. As young boys Jim and Ed were close cousins who continued that friendship into their adulthood. I believe that the future will be filled with memories of Ed that will leave us all thinking, smiling and telling stories. He will long be a source of inspiration and laughter. We will always have the memories, his stories and his joy of life to offer others. What a legacy that is for a man to leave.Thank you Ed. We want assure the family that in the coming days you will be in all our thoughts and prayers.
