Obituary for Hilda Trethewey Morrow (Stick)

Hilda Trethewey  Morrow (Stick)
Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre on September 13, in the presence of her family, after a short battle with cancer, Hilda Trethewey Morrow (nee Stick) aged 89. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Henry, parents Leonard and Hilda Stick (Bay Roberts), brother Norman, and grandson Easton. She leaves to mourn her children David (Shirley), Jim (Julia), Marnie (Paul) Hillyard, Andrew (Patty), her sister Enid Starr (Ronald deceased), sister-in-law Rose Stick, grandchildren Sarah (Greg), Robyn (Baris), Kaitlin (Seann), Jacob (Vanessa), Cael, Hannah, Mark (Becky), Andrew, Leah, great granddaughter Hayley Mae Hillyard, nieces Lorraine, Bernice, Robyn and nephew Trent, and many family and friends especially the Porters and Southcotts. Hilda was born in St. John’s, raised in Coley’s Point and Bay Roberts, and educated at Memorial College graduating with her teaching diploma. She began her career in Kelligrews before moving to Grand Falls with her close companions Dorothy Rockwood and Edna Morgan where she taught school at Grand Falls Academy for a number of years. She met and married Robert Morrow and together they had four children and operated Morrow’s Nurseries, a business that continued for fifty years. In the early days, she was an active Guider and member of the Anglican Church Choir. She loved to travel, and was an avid reader and gardener. In her eighty-seventh year, Hilda co-authored the book ‘First In Line’ with Steve Bartlett, a biography documenting the accomplishments of her father Leonard T. Stick. Those who were close to Hilda will forever remember her kindness, her frankness, her no nonsense approach to life, her devotion to family and friends, the little note books where she scribbled the important events of the day, her knitted socks and Christmas stockings, the endless supply of home made jams, marmalade, and cookies and her famous ham and bean suppers. The family would like to express sincere thanks to Dr. Robert Butler, the staff on the Oncology ward at the Health Science Complex, and Bonnie Foster for their kind and loving care during Hilda’s brief illness. Visitation will take place at Central Funeral Homes, 45 Union Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, on Friday, September 15 from 7 – 9 PM and Saturday September 16 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 PM with Memorial Service at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Grand Falls-Windsor on Sunday, September 17 at 2 PM. Interment to follow at the Anglican Church Cemetery, Union Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, where she will forever rest with her loving husband Robert. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Although we say goodbye to you.
We know that for a lifetime through,
All you have taught us will remain
To light with hope Life’s reaching plain

The memory of you will stay
With us though you are far away.
Your gentle voice, your quiet words
Will fly to us like homing birds.

Your many acts of kindness,
Your wisdom in the long day’s stress
Will linger in our memory!
Your patience and your sympathy.

The problems you have understood,
Your influence, far reaching, good;
These we will keep though you depart!
…You have a shrine in every heart!
