Obituary for Robert George Molloy

Robert George Molloy
Robert George (“Bob”) Molloy (1934-2017)
Robert George (“Bob”) Molloy died in hospital in Grand Falls on September 27, 2017. He was 83 years old. Bob was predeceased by his brother (James F. Molloy) and sister (Sister Margaret Molloy). Bob had no children of his own, but will be deeply mourned by his seven nieces and nephews, all children of his brother Jim (Anne, John, Michael, Maureen, Patricia, Peggy, and Kathy), through whom he also has great-nieces and great nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews too numerous to list. Bob Molloy worked in the lab at the mill in Grand Falls until his retirement in 1999. Outside work, his three passions were sports, music and animals.
In his youth, Bob was a keen baseball player and fan and an avid golfer. His biggest sports commitment, however, was to hockey. He was key figure in the early years of the Grand Falls Cataracts Hockey Club and was the team’s General Manager in the 70s and 80s. In January 2010 his extensive contribution to the team as a builder was recognized by the Cataracts in a ceremony in which his jersey was officially retired and raised to the rafters of the stadium. All who knew Bob were familiar with his passionate devotion to the Boston Bruins and the Boston Red Sox. There was no bigger fan!
Music played an enormous role in Bob’s life. He played a variety of musical instruments, both brass and reeds, including for many years the E Flat Bass in the B. Coy Band of the Royal Nfld. Regiment. His main performance focus, however, was the saxophone and he loved the music of the Big Band era. He played in dance bands for many years in and around Grand Falls in the 50s and 60s, most notably with the Commanders Orchestra. He had eclectic taste (ranging from Frank Sinatra to the Eagles to Lady Gaga) and a collection of literally hundreds of CDs that would be the envy of any jazz lover.
There were always animals in Bob’s life – both dogs and cats – and he adored them all. He loved to take long walks with his dog and to watch sports with a cat in his lap. Some of the luckiest animals ever to walk the earth were the pets of Bob Molloy!
Bob had many health challenges, particularly over the past two years. Bob’s family is profoundly grateful to the wonderful personal care workers who looked after Bob in his home during that time, and in particular to Joanne Champion who was like family to him. Bob was a lovely, intelligent, kind-hearted man, with a sparkling wit and engaging personality. To know him was to love him. He will be deeply missed by those left behind.

For those of you who knew Robert, dogs were a very important part of his life. The charity the family has chosen is
