Obituary for Terence Desmond "Terry" French

Terence Desmond "Terry"  French
TERENCE DESMOND FRENCH
August 3, 1951 - October 3, 2017

Terence, the son of Desmond and Sadie (Head) French, was born in Grand Falls, NL and died in Fredericton, NB. Terry’s love of life, humor and spirit has been shared with his devoted and loving wife Sherry and his brother Jim (Karen), and sisters, Christine Parsons (Gary), and Cindy Reynolds (Peter). Also left to mourn are brothers-in-law Gary Munn (Gwen) and Darrell Munn (Ruby); nieces, Sarah Reid (Robert), Laura French (Michael Ellsworth), Krista Kettle (Billy), Lisa Button (Roger), Susan Munn (David Brook) and Sondra Donovan (Grant); nephews, Mark Smith (Dani), Steven French (Sara), David French (Laura Rumbolt) and David Munn (Richelle). Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Jocelyn Lane (Bill); and his Father/Mother-in-Law Manford and Mary (Pedersen) Munn.

Growing up on Memorial Avenue, attending Notre Dame Academy and then St. Mike’s, Terry was active in all sports but made his mark on the ice. In 1969 Terry was the first winner of the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League’s Albert Pee Wee Crane Memorial Award as the league’s Rookie of the Year. He played the game well with teams including the Grand Falls Cataracts, the Ottawa 67’s, the Memorial University Beothucks, and trained with the WHA’s Quebec Nordiques. In 1971 Terry had the distinction of being the first Newfoundlander to be drafted in the NHL when he was chosen by the Montreal Canadians.

Frenchie moved to Labrador in 1976 and worked for Wabush Mines. During his time in Labrador he was an active member of the Carol Players Drama Group. In 1980 Frenchie devoted his life and love to Sherry Munn. Their pets were an important part of their family. He was supportive of Sherry’s passion for dog sledding and spent countless hours tending to the needs of the huskies.

Upon retirement to New Brunswick in 2012 Terry continued to work seasonally as a heavy equipment operator driving a snow plow in downtown Toronto along Yonge, Gerrard and College Streets. He took particular pride in this work and was determined to go back there again this season. But that was not to be. Complications developed from diabetes and related heart issues in late summer. Terry leaves us cherishing memories of records and cheers, and of our own youth and the lasting friendships coming out of the town he called home.

To an Athlete Dying Young

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
A.E. Housman
