Obituary for David John Kelly

David John Kelly
DAVID JOHN KELLY
1933 - 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of the late David John Kelly announce his passing at the Hugh Twomey Centre in Botwood, NL on June 24, 2018 at the age of 85. He is predeceased by his son, Darren, and brothers, Bill and Terry. Left with fond and loving memories are his wife, Gertrude, sons, Brent (Valerie) of Halifax, NS, Dave (Margaret) of Shelburne, ON, Tom (Michelle) of Coldbrook, NS, Patrick (Cindy) of Middle Sackville, NS, and Jeff (Judy) of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, and daughter Rowena (Peter) of Winnipeg, MB. Also leaving to mourn are his sisters, Patricia Coddington and Caroline Dow, grandchildren, Kieran, Dillon, Sarah, Paige, Zachary, Victoria, Christina, Lauren, Brett, Braeden, David, Tyrone, Brandon, Brittany, Stephanie, Matthew, Madison, and Jodi, and great-grandchildren Bryson, Jude, Grady, and Hayden.

Dave was a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces who served 2 years as a peacekeeper in Korea (1950-1952). He came back from Korea with malaria and spent several months in St. John’s recuperating. He was very patriotic and proud to have served his country. Once healthy, he returned to his job as a papermaker in the mill, and raised his family in Bishop’s Falls. He was a brilliant mechanic and was known among his peers as one of the best at his job. He was very involved with the Legion, no matter where he lived. He was a gentle soul, very intelligent and a “happy-go-lucky” person. He put everyone above himself and was comfortable around all forms of people. He had a will to live that was extraordinary, as evident by his age. He instilled into us the importance of family, dedication, perseverance, and also hard work. He spent his last 7 years at the Hugh Twomey Centre, where he was greatly admired by both staff and patients. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Father Moses Nwokocha will conduct the funeral service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at the Interfaith Cemetery, Grand Falls-Windsor. Urn bearer will be his son, Patrick Kelly. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Michael Goodyear of Central Funeral Homes.
