Obituary for Ruth Mary Sullivan (Dunphy)

Ruth Mary Sullivan (Dunphy)
RUTH MARY SULLIVAN
1928 - 2018

Ruth was a wonderful woman who absolutely loved every precious moment of her life. She was grateful for every opportunity she was given to spend with her family and dear friends. She was always appreciative of life’s simple pleasures and treasured each new day to the fullest.

Ruth was born on July 19th, 1928, the oldest of twelve children to Bill and Anne Dunphy. She was born and raised in Grand Falls, married her husband Peter on February 6th, 1947 and started a family soon after. They were blessed with six children; four boys and two girls.

Ruth was a caring mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and devoted friend. She loved to travel, spend time with family and friends, go to church, take care of her plants, go to yard sales, listen to music, watch t.v. and go for scenic drives.

In recent years, Ruth struggled with a medical condition known as Macular Degeneration. She was always determined to find ways to overcome her vision loss and even though a part of her freedom was taken when she had to give up her license, she always managed to find ways to visit her friends, go to the mall and maintain a positive outlook on life.

After several months of being in hospital and courageously fighting her deteriorating health, Ruth passed away on June 25th at the A.M. Guy Memorial Hospital in Buchans. She was just a few weeks shy of her 90th birthday. Ruth will be remembered for her strength, willpower and persistence to live.
Ruth leaves with fond and loving memories, her children Peter (Annette) Sullivan, Bill (Ruth) Sullivan, Catherine (Dave) Sharpe, David (Lisa) Sullivan and Ruth (Mike) Mirza; grandchildren Marty and Mark Burt, Christina (John) Antle, Robert (Stephanie) Sullivan, Karen (Jim) Phair, Peter (Melissa) Sullivan, Michael and Emily Sullivan, Ashley and Sean Sullivan and Michael Sullivan-Mirza; great grandchildren Ian and Ryan Antle, Caleb and Casey Sullivan, Sophie Phair, James and Grace Burt, William Sullivan and Rosie Hong. Ruth also leaves behind, five sisters, four brothers, an aunt, as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws and special friends.

In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Boyd in 1987, her sister Betty Coogan and brother Tom Dunphy.

Ruth’s family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Diedericks, the nurses on 3-B at the CNRHC as well as the staff of the A.M. Guy Memorial Hospital who made sure they went above and beyond to provide comfort and care for Ruth in the final weeks of her life. They would also like to thank Ruth’s home care worker, Karen Lane, who provided her with love and care this past year. Ruth loved her like family.

She had a fondness for children, and she also loved flowers. Flowers will be gratefully accepted or donations can be made in her memory to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Father Moses will conduct the funeral mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, June 28th at 11:00 a.m. with cremation and interment to follow at a later date. Pallbearers will consist of people that were very special to Ruth, including her son Bill Sullivan, her son-in-law Dave Sharpe, her nephew Paul Sullivan, her brothers-in-law Dick Duder and Dave Messervey as well as her close friend, Dave Furlong.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes.
