Condolence From: Vernon Smallwood
Condolence: It's nearly an year ago we lost one of God's most treasured desciple who all her life gave this world more than 100% of herself.
Her letter writing was just one part of her life, but many others benefited from her Salvation Army ministry.
It was many months after her passing away (PTG) that I heard about the sad news.
Living in North Wales and to far away from Springfield was probable the reason the news didn't reach me
Gladys emailed me many years ago when on of my circular mails landed on her screen, she wrote thinking I was related to your Premier. After that we wrote regularly. On the 14th my thoughts will be of her, God Bless. Vernon

Condolence:

To the Osmond Family : We were saddened to hear of the passing of your precious Mother and Grandmother. Over the years we had become friends with Gladys and greatly admired her christian witness. She has encouraged hundreds of people in her journey through life and God will reward her for her kind deeds. She shared Gods love to those she encountered each day. She will always be remembered by those who knew her best and especially for those serving in the military whose lives she touched with her love and concern. Cherish your memories of an outstanding lady and may God comfort and strengthen you in your time of grief. Be assured of our love and prayers. God bless you all !!

Condolence: My deepest condolences to Capt. Osmond's family. I wish that I could be there with you today as you lay your mother to rest. While Mom and Dad were stationed in Springdale, I got the chance to get to know her. She was such a wonderful, kind lady who always welcomed a young child into her home. She made time for me whenever I went to visit her, and I loved to sit and listen to her stories about various knickknacks around her home, some of which must have come from the soldiers she wrote. Even though I was 8 when we moved there, Capt. Osmond became a dear friend to a young, shy girl. I've lost touch with her over the years, but have never forgotten her. She was truly one of a kind. My heart can't begin to feel the grief of your family, but know that she is finally home in Heaven. Please know that my heart is mourning for her as well, but I am also secure in the knowledge that she has been promoted to Glory.

With my deepest sympathy,
Susan Baggs

Condolence: To Family Members and Friends,
I first met Gladys Osmond approximately 15 years ago when I was posted to Gander, Newfoundland. I travelled from CFB /9 Wing Gander to Springdale with a bus full of military personnel, (officers and non-commissioned members). We were all very anxious to meet this wonderful woman we had heard about who was using most of her time and resources to write to our troops who were on postings away from their homes and families. When we arrived at Gladys' residence in Springdale, she did not hesitate to welcome all of us in to her (tiny) home. My first impression of Gladys was how extremely happy she appeared as she spoke about the thousands of letters she had written. She knew in her heart that she had contributed to making someone's life a little more enjoyable, and it was easy to tell that meant a lot to her. And she had the map to prove it! On her wall, she had a coloured stick-pin placed in every location where she has posted a letter. Needless to say, the map was just about covered in stick-pins! To show our appreciation to Gladys, we brought her to Kaitlin's for a nice lunch. I can confidently report that she really enjoyed going to lunch with all of her new found military friends. On further visits with Gladys, in addition to going for lunch at Kaitlins, we brought other gifts to help her to continue with her writing. On one of our visits, I can't say how delighted I was to see Gladys had a picture of me with my arm around her. I believe it was taken at Kaitlin's on her 80th Birthday. As a result of our visits with Gladys, the Canadian Forces Maple Leaf featured an article about her which started the ball rolling towards receiving the recognition that she so richly deserved. Not that Gladys wanted this recognition, but rather that we wanted her to be recognized for her love and caring of our troops.
God Bless you Gladys. As a result of the joy that you brought to the hearts of so many, you will long be remembered.

Condolence: Your mom was a treasure whose value will not be realized this side of glory. The world was made better by her contribution to it. She was one of a kind and her life contributed greatly to those of us who were blessed enough to know her. Heaven is all the much richer now because she resides there. She was a good and faithful Servant of Christ. A model of goodness and grace.
May you be comforted in knowing that you her family are surrounded and upheld in your time of grief and sorrow by the love and prayers of her many friends and acquaintances. From the lips of the Lord she so faithfully served she has heard these words..."Well done thou good and faither - enter now the joy ofcthe Lord"

Condolence: The family of Gladys Osmond
So sad to hear of your mother's passing. Our introduction to her family was when Everett shared an hospital room with her Dad, George
Manuel. We became good friends , which led to summer trips to the cabin , winter visits at the Bargarys and later visits with Gladys at her cottage. She was a great lady and we will miss our visits ,e mails, chats and prayers.
She often talked about her family. Take comfort that she truly has been "Promoted to Glory" and her God cares about her grieving family and friends.

Condolence: A Tribute to Captain (CAPPY) Gladys Osmond August 12, 1923 – January 14, 2015
On Jan. 14th, 2015 this Province lost an icon and a hero, not because she was rich or a great politician but because of her compassion for the ordinary people.
After she retired from the Salvation Army in Toronto she returned to Springdale and spent most of her time writing letters to the troops overseas at the rate of 1000 per month, quite an accomplishment for someone of her age and who was partially blind.
I first met Gladys some 70 years ago but I did not know it until a few years ago.
I knew of her and her work for quite some time and I did meet her several times mostly at funerals and did have talks with her, the first time when Corporal Bouzanne got killed in Afghanistan and was buried in Little Bay, Green Bay.
It wasn’t until I received an email on Feb 11, 2010, which was in big print because of her failing eyesight, that we got to know each other; she had read one of my articles in the newspaper where I had mentioned my grandfather and where I was born at Lushes Bight. It just happened she was Captain Gladys Manuel with the Salvation Army and was our preacher in 1945 and knew my family quite well.
The email I received, she was 86½ with limited sight. She stated I do not make long distance call, takes all my time to keep up with postage and other supplies.
This email I will treasure for life and I am enclosing a copy because it can explain about life back in the Forties an about Gladys, better than I can.
I went to visit her last fall and brought her some cod fish, had a long talk with her even talked about funerals, her wish was a military funeral. We reminisced about the old times.
It was the last time I saw her and it was a shock to hear of her passing and to her family I offer my deepest condolence.
I will always remember her as a great & compassionate person and a good soldier for the cross. As I’m sure thousands of our Veterans and soldiers will for the many, many letters that she wrote to them while they were trying to make this world a better place, as she did from her time in Lushes Bight until the time of her passing.
Bon voyage dear friend CAPPY, as my grandmother called you, you will be sorely missed. . . . .

I knew you when you and your sister Gwen were about age 10.
I doubt you would remember me, unless you heard your Mom or Your Grandpsrents speak of me. I was Captain Gladys Manuel then....Now , for many years my sir name is Osmond...my married name...I have been widowed more than 30 years...no time to look for a replacement. I retired in 1988 while serving with the Salvation Army in Toronto. I returned to Springdale, though Grand Falls was my home town. Much has happened in my retirement years. Most of my time now I write to the Troops...at the rate of 1000 letters every month, plus countless e mails. I get many replies and many Military visitors...including General Hillier. Health wise I am doing well for 86 1/2 with limited sight. I remember sitting with you and the family at meals....Your grandparents were faithful Salvationists...and treated me like family. Your Grandmother beat the big drum, Grandfather the kettle drum. Your Mom was the Postmistress and when the boat came in with the mail...the house and the steps would be full of anxious people , looking for mail....and that was years before Family Allowence & UIC....If I remember your Mom workedf for $5 a month....of a quarter. I sure would like to be able to sit & chat with you...I don't drive, nor do I travel alone, because of my failing sight. I can still write...every day...with large print and special glasses....I don't know if this will reach you...If so, please reply....or call by phone....I don't make long distance calls...Takes all my time to keep up with postage & other sipplies....I hear you on open line occasionally...pushing for improvement in the fishery and other subjects...Keep up the good work...Gladys...as I am known to the Troops....Or...which I don't use.
Capt..Gladys Osmond LL.D. O.N.L. Or Dr. Osmond (hc)
To your Grandmother I was always CAPPY.
