Condolence: It's nearly an year ago we lost one of God's most treasured desciple who all her life gave this world more than 100% of herself. Her letter writing was just one part of her life, but many others benefited from her Salvation Army ministry. It was many months after her passing away (PTG) that I heard about the sad news. Living in North Wales and to far away from Springfield was probable the reason the news didn't reach me Gladys emailed me many years ago when on of my circular mails landed on her screen, she wrote thinking I was related to your Premier. Over the years we had become friends with Gladys and greatly admired her christian witness. Condolence: My deepest condolences to Capt. Osmond's family. I wish that I could be there with you today as you lay your mother to rest. While Mom and Dad were stationed in Springdale, I got the chance to get to know her. She was such a wonderful, kind lady who always welcomed a young child into her home. She made time for me whenever I went to visit her, and I loved to sit and listen to her stories about various knickknacks around her home, some of which must have come from the soldiers she wrote. Even though I was 8 when we moved there, Capt. Osmond became a dear friend to a young, shy girl. I've lost touch with her over the years, but have never forgotten her. She was truly one of a kind. My heart can't begin to feel the grief of your family, but know that she is finally home in Heaven. Condolence: To Family Members and Friends, I first met Gladys Osmond approximately 15 years ago when I was posted to Gander, Newfoundland. I travelled from CFB /9 Wing Gander to Springdale with a bus full of military personnel, (officers and non-commissioned members). We were all very anxious to meet this wonderful woman we had heard about who was using most of her time and resources to write to our troops who were on postings away from their homes and families. When we arrived at Gladys' residence in Springdale, she did not hesitate to welcome all of us in to her (tiny) home. My first impression of Gladys was how extremely happy she appeared as she spoke about the thousands of letters she had written. She knew in her heart that she had contributed to making someone's life a little more enjoyable, and it was easy to tell that meant a lot to her. And she had the map to prove it! On her wall, she had a coloured stick-pin placed in every location where she has posted a letter. Needless to say, the map was just about covered in stick-pins! To show our appreciation to Gladys, we brought her to Kaitlin's for a nice lunch. I can confidently report that she really enjoyed going to lunch with all of her new found military friends. On further visits with Gladys, in addition to going for lunch at Kaitlins, we brought other gifts to help her to continue with her writing. On one of our visits, I can't say how delighted I was to see Gladys had a picture of me with my arm around her. I believe it was taken at Kaitlin's on her 80th Birthday. As a result of our visits with Gladys, the Canadian Forces Maple Leaf featured an article about her which started the ball rolling towards receiving the recognition that she so richly deserved. Not that Gladys wanted this recognition, but rather that we wanted her to be recognized for her love and caring of our troops. God Bless you Gladys. Condolence: The family of Gladys Osmond So sad to hear of your mother's passing.Our introduction to her family was when Everett shared an hospital room with her Dad, George Manuel. We became good friends , which led to summer trips to the cabin , winter visits at the Bargarys and later visits with Gladys at her cottage.She was a great lady and we will miss our visits ,e mails,chats and prayers. Condolence: A Tribute to Captain (CAPPY) Gladys Osmond August 12, 1923 – January 14, 2015 On Jan. 14th, 2015 this Province lost an icon and a hero, not because she was rich or a great politician but because of her compassion for the ordinary people. After she retired from the Salvation Army in Toronto she returned to Springdale and spent most of her time writing letters to the troops overseas at the rate of 1000 per month, quite an accomplishment for someone of her age and who was partially blind. I first met Gladys some 70 years ago but I did not know it until a few years ago. I knew of her and her work for quite some time and I did meet her several times mostly at funerals and did have talks with her, the first time when Corporal Bouzanne got killed in Afghanistan and was buried in Little Bay, Green Bay. It wasn’t until I received an email on Feb 11, 2010, which was in big print because of her failing eyesight, that we got to know each other; she had read one of my articles in the newspaper where I had mentioned my grandfather and where I was born at Lushes Bight. It just happened she was Captain Gladys Manuel with the Salvation Army and was our preacher in 1945 and knew my family quite well. The email I received, she was 86½ with limited sight. She stated I do not make long distance call, takes all my time to keep up with postage and other supplies. This email I will treasure for life and I am enclosing a copy because it can explain about life back in the Forties an about Gladys, better than I can. I went to visit her last fall and brought her some cod fish, had a long talk with her even talked about funerals, her wish was a military funeral. We reminisced about the old times. It was the last time I saw her and it was a shock to hear of her passing and to her family I offer my deepest condolence. I will always remember her as a great & compassionate person and a good soldier for the cross. As I’m sure thousands of our Veterans and soldiers will for the many, many letters that she wrote to them while they were trying to make this world a better place, as she did from her time in Lushes Bight until the time of her passing. Condolence: I am saddened to hear of Gladys' passing. When I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 I had the pleasure of corresponding with her. Her letters were wonderful and we spoke of many things. She truly was a dear lady who made many feel loved during times that were very difficult. Condolence: To the Osmond family, Gladys lifted the spirits of so many of us while we were deployed overseas. She even wrote and emailed me after I came home to make sure all was well. I still have her letters and emails and I'll keep them forever. Thank you for helping her to continue her work when she was having difficulty. Our country and humanity has lost a great soul. Condolence: It is with deep saddness that I learned of the passing of Gladys. Please accept my deepest condolences. I remember in 2000 while serving in Kosovo receiving one of her letters, it was warm and from the heart. Many a soldier got a letter from Gladys and her writing buddies and all were well appreciated. I wrote back to her and we exchanged letters for the 6 months I was stationed overseas. She is indeed a special lady and earned her place in heaven. Condolence: To The Osmond Family Promoted to Glory is one of the greatest things anyone could receive. Captain Gladys has received her promotion and we rejoice in that thought today. She was an inspiration to many people including us throughout the years. To visit her and see her excitement and pride in her overseas ministry with the soldiers was indeed a blessing. Condolence: To the Osmond Family: It is with great sadness that we hear of the death of Dr. Osmond. Over many years she has been an inspiration and encourager to many members of the Canadian Armed Forces through her letter writing ministry. Each letter was written with compassion and concern for the soldier that this letter would be forwarded to. Often been the only mail a solder received that week, it always lifted the spirits of the recipient. God has used this letter to bring comfort and hope. Knowing that she has been promoted to Glory will bring the family that same Comfort and Hope that she so freely gave to us. May God in His tenderness and loving spirit be with the Osmond Family. May they take comfort in knowing that she is with the Saviour whom she loved and served her entire life.
