Obituary for Raymond Alphonsus Keough
Passed peacefully away on December 20, 2021 surrounded by family and friends at the Carmelite House in GFW, Raymond Alphonsus Keough, age 73.
Raymond was predeceased by infant son, parents Michael and Mary Keough, sisters Margaret (Kevin Ryan) and Mary (Selby Sheppard), brother Michael; parents-in-law William and Hilda Hillyard.
Left to mourn with fond memories, his loving wife of 50 years Vera (Hillyard), son Peter (Susan), daughters Denise Hooper (Mike), Amy Walsh (Calvin). Grandchildren Laura and Sara Keough, and Andrew Hooper, brother Pat (Bernice), sisters Elizabeth (Dave), Sheila (Frank), brothers-in-law Roy (Marilyn) Hillyard, John (Paula) Hillyard, sister-in-law Beryl (Alec) Saunders, nieces & nephews, and a long list of close family and friends.
Ray was a great athlete. Throughout his life he enjoyed golf, hockey, and baseball. He coached many championship hockey teams and was also inducted into the NL Baseball Hall of Fame. He was well respected and will be fondly remembered by a large circle of hockey players in both minor and high school hockey.
Ray was a passionate golf enthusiast from the moment he picked up a club, and spent many days at the golf course where he met and played with many friends.
Ray always had a positive attitude and was rarely seen without a smile. He kept this positive attitude throughout his illness. Anyone who knew Ray, knew he was the most loving husband, father and grandfather his family could ask for. Ray had a kind and gentle way about him with his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
Ray’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jared Butler who was his doctor as well as a close family friend; Amy Drummond, RN; Dr. Stewart Rorke, Dr. Brent Tompkins (Eastern Heath) the staff at the Cancer Clinic in GFW, palliative care nurse Ruth Wells, the staff on 2A at CNRHC, and the staff at the Carmelite House.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no service or visitation will be held at this time. The family will have a service and celebration of life at a later date.
Donations in Ray’s memory can be made to the Lionel Kelland Hospice or the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Center.
