Obituary for Alice Sadie Cater (Mercer)

Alice Sadie Cater
February 5th, 1936-November 3rd, 2021

It is with heavy hearts the Cater family announce the passing of their amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Alice Sadie Cater. Alice was the daughter of Mildred and Eugene Mercer, and she was born and raised in Bay Roberts, NL.

Alice left Bay Roberts to attend Memorial University where she trained as a teacher. From there she headed to Central Newfoundland to teach primary school. Throughout her life Alice worked at many jobs of interest including the Public Library.

Alice loved being active in the United Church, playing Bridge, travelling with her Bridge group and many family gatherings. She brought many people together with her ability to create a “scoff” like none other.

She was the president of the Newfoundland Conference for the United Church. She preached in many different churches across the province. Active in the UCW she held office several times and had great pride in her UCW family.

Alice delivered messages of hope and love through her work within the church inspiring and comforting all she met. It was her faith, values, and love connecting her to her husband of 63 years and raising 4 children she was very proud of.
Alice is pre-deceased by her father, Eugene Mercer, mother, Mildred Mercer, sister, Winnie Dale, brother, Eugene Mercer, and son, Edwin Cater.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her husband Robert Cater Sr., sons Stephen Cater of Grand Falls-Windsor and Robert Cater JR (Viva) Cater of Grand Falls-Windsor, daughters Beverly Cater-Gauthier of St Johns and Susan Cater of Wolfville, NS. Also leaving to mourn, grandchildren Melanie, Andrew, Adam, Jeremy, Laura, Stephen, Victoria, and great-grandson Mason. She also leaves to mourn her brother Edwin (Betty) Mercer and a large circle of family and friends.

Rev. Kim Waite will conduct the funeral service at Memorial United Church on Monday, November 8th, at 2p.m. Interment to follow at the Interfaith Cemetery.
