Obituary for Allan George William Nuotio

It is with sadness that the family of the late Allan George William Nuotio announce his peaceful passing in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on December 29, 2022, at the age of 85, after a brief illness. Known as a kind heart, a colourful dreamer, a builder, a sharp mind, a devoted father, grandfather and husband.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, parents Celia and George. Leaving to mourn his daughter Linda (Lyndon), his two sons Glenn (Niall) and Mark (Juan), and his three dear grandchildren, Katharine, Parker and Lumi. Also left to mourn are his brother Jamie Nuotio (Heather), and their sons Jason (Jen) and Mick. Allan will be missed by dear friends and relatives from British Columbia and Northern Ontario to Grand Falls-Windsor, St. John’s, and Northern Bay, NL, along with generations of an extended Nuotio family originating in Finland.

Allan Nuotio was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, September 10, 1937 to Finnish immigrant parents Celia Elina (nee Hakkarainen) and Yrjo Rafael Nuotio, who met in Canada. He spent his childhood and young adulthood on the B.C. coast, including a Nelson Island homestead and, later, Gibsons and Vancouver. The late 1960s brought Allan to Grand Falls, Newfoundland, on a short contract to help wire the newly expanded mill. He discovered a critical issue with the electrical work no one else would have noticed. The company did a complete electrical reinstallation -- and hired Allan on permanently. But his roots were planted even more firmly when he met Mary, a fellow guest at the Carmelite Hotel and, soon after, his beloved wife.

While in Grand Falls, he and Mary raised their three kids, while he variously worked for the mill, taught community college, and was a supporter of local tourism and cultural development. A board member of the Exploits Development Association, he also played a key role in establishing what is now the Demasduit Regional Museum. Allan was often called upon as a DJ for local dances and also as a consulting technician for live music and touring concert events. He co-founded and ran two much-loved local High Street small businesses: Sentek and Pages & Pastimes.

Retiring in the early 1990s, Allan, with Mary, returned to the coast, moving to Northern Bay, NL, pursuing his HAM radio passion under the call sign VO1AI as an Executive Member of Baccalieu Amateur Radio Klub (BARK), picking blueberries on his land by the ocean, enjoying life with his grandchildren, helping his neighbours when he could, and giving a not infrequent call on any variety of topics to CBC’s Radio Noon.

Allan’s family will receive visitors at the Central Funeral Home, 45 Union Street, Grand-Falls Windsor, from 2 - 4pm on Tuesday, January 3rd, with a commemorative celebration of life to be held at the home beginning at 4pm. The Nuotio and Flynn family are thankful for the support of compassionate staff at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan’s memory can be made to the Exploits Valley SPCA or the Grand Falls-Windsor Heritage Society.

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more." -Lord Byron
