Obituary for Alphonsus Joseph Canning

ALPHONSUS "PHONSE" CANNING
1946 - 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alphonsus (Phonse) Canning as he passed away peacefully on November 30th at Central Health Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by his daughter, son-in-law, and special friend after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Phonse was born in Botwood, NL to his loving parents Peter and Mary Canning. He grew up in Bishop’s Falls and spent most of his adult life there outside the 8 years living and working in Hamilton, Ont. Phonse will be remembered fondly as a gentle soul, a special friend, and a loving father and grandfather. In addition to his friendly ways, Phonse was known by many as a hard-working member of the Coca-Cola team where he worked for more than 30 years.

Predeceased by father Peter, mother Mary (Turner), Brother Bill, and Sister Georgina (Mary) Tremblett.

Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his daughter Jody Murray (Kerry) and son Sean.

Also leaving to mourn are his brothers Pat, Tom (Anneke), Dennis (Judy) and Peter (Gloria). His sisters Helen and Cathy (Paul Shallow). His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved them all dearly: Nickolas (Amber), Riley and Leah Fancey; Shelby and Jacob Fraser, along with his great-granddaughter Sarah. He also leaves to mourn a large circle of family and friends across the Province and beyond.

The family wishes to thank the palliative care team who helped them take such good care of Phonse at home for the past couple of months before going into the Carmelite house early in the week. Special thanks to Cathy from Horwood’s Home Care for all her caring support and always going above and beyond to help, and to Jody's niece Renee for the care and compassion provided through Central Funeral Home.

Rev. Kim Waite will conduct the funeral service from Bishop's Falls Funeral Home on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The funeral will be live-streamed through the Central Funeral Homes Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CentralFuneralHomes
