Obituary for Angus Canning

Angus passed peacefully away, surrounding by family at the Central Newfoundland Regional Heath Centre on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024 at the age of 74 years.

He is predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Alice Canning and his brother-in-law, Keith Smith.

He leaves to mourn his two daughters, Jennifer (Jeff) and Julie, his son, Robert (Wendy) along with their mother, Barbara. Leaving with loving memories are his brothers Mike (Brenda), Gerald (Sheila), Don (Geraldine) and his sisters, Patricia, Alice and Cathy. Also left to mourn are his three granddaughters, Charley, Avery and Kaylee, his grandson, Eric and great-granddaughter, Lily along with his little buddy, Cooper. His nieces and nephews will also miss him dearly.

Angus grew up in Bishop’s Falls in the wonderful time of fast cars and great music. Whether it was in his bright green Roadrunner or his flashy Corvette, he was always surrounded by family and friends. Angus was involved in many organizations as a player and a volunteer. Whether it was selling tickets for Minor Hockey or playing the music for the early morning skaters of the Fallsview Figure Skating Club, Angus was always there to lend a helping hand. For many years, Angus was part of the Bishop’s Falls Olde Express and his memories being the executive manager of the team were among his favorites to share.

Working for the CN Railway, he continued the family tradition until its closure in 1988. He went on to live in BC and Alberta for many years before coming home to stay in his hometown of Bishop’s Falls. Living simply, going for drives and ice cream with Jules, enjoying a hot coffee or meal with his sisters or heading over to Melv’s shed brought him happiness. A good game of crib or solitaire never went astray was Gus was around. An avid Toronto fan whether it was the Maple Leafs or the Blue Jays. The greatest gift Angus could give was his ability to listen. Always there with an open ear and advice to give, it is surely what his family will miss the most. It is most certainly how his family will try to live in his memory, without complaint, with patience, with love.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the nursing staff on 3A, The Cancer Care Clinic, and in the Emergency department of CNRHC who showed incredible compassion to our father and our family during his short illness. Words cannot express our gratitude for how you helped our Dad live his final days with integrity.

We will celebrate Angus’ life during a visitation on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 from 2-4 at Central Funeral Homes in Bishop’s Falls. As per our Dad’s wishes, a party will be held at the Knights of Columbus after the visitation. Great music, good food and the sharing of memories. We will remember and celebrate his life together. In the words of Merle Haggard, “Faith is the only way we’re going to make it. None of us are smart enough to do it on our own.”
Miss you, Dad.
