Obituary for Angus James Carey

Angus Carey
1948 - 2021

It has been a sad Christmas for the Carey family. On Christmas Day, we lost a father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. While his health had been in decline for a couple of years, Angus had been fighting it and had hope for a treatment which was to start early in the new year. Sadly, though, he developed pneumonia and his passing came much faster than any of us expected.

Angus was born and spent most of his life in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. He was the son of Robert (Bob) and Hazel Carey, nee Canning. Angus had one stint outside Newfoundland, working in the nickel mines in Thompson, MB. He returned home in his late twenties and decided to take a plunge into the entertainment business. From that idea came Carey’s Entertainment Centre, the nightclub, lounge and bowling alleys on Lincoln Rd., which he ran, along with his brothers and sisters, for almost 15 years. Later in life, he had a career as an investment manager.

He had the biggest, booming laugh and loved to make others laugh as well, often with a well-oiled joke of his own. He smiled easily, loved deeply and even when he was struggling with his health, he could be heard singing or humming a tune and trying to look on the bright side of things. Angus really enjoyed getting together with his siblings for a rousing game of cards or dice and anyone who joined knew they had better bring their ‘A’ game. He was always on board for good food and interesting conversation.

But most of all he loved his whole family, especially his three beautiful sons, the lights of his life. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his boys. He talked about them, always, and wanted the best for them in every way.

Angus needed support during his final years and his brothers and sisters rallied to his side, especially his darling sister, Ruthie, as he called her. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for him. Angus, himself, had many kind words for the wonderful people at Twin Town Manor and at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. The family wants to thank everyone who helped him these last few years.

It’s so hard to believe Angus is gone. We will miss his humour, his smile and his laughter. He was one of a kind and we are so glad he was ours.

Left with broken hearts but also with many incredible memories of their Dad, are his sons - Aaron (Samantha Gill), Evan, and Kyle (Jessica Power). Also mourning are sisters Annetta Power, Diane Griffin (Michael) and Ruth Hillier (Donnie); brothers Neil (Ruby) and Tom (Joan), sister-in-law Fran Carey and his 17 nieces and nephews. Angus was predeceased by his parents, his sister Lorraine, brothers Colin and Vern, and brother-in-law George Power.

We will meet to celebrate his life when times have changed and family and friends can be together.
