Obituary for Austin Patrick Walsh

Austin Patrick Walsh
1926-2022

Passed away at Central Newfoundland Long-Term Care Home, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on September 16, 2022, Austin Patrick Walsh. Austin was born on March 5, 1926 to Frank and Mary Walsh of Grand Falls, Newfoundland. It was in Grand Falls, where Austin met Esther Courtney; they married and together, enjoyed 74 years of marriage, raising 14 children.

As a young man, Austin left Newfoundland to find employment in Boston, MA. A year later, he returned home and found work with the Anglo Newfoundland Development Company in Grand Falls. Throughout his employment with the pulp and paper mill, he worked in the Sulphite Department, as an oiler in the woodroom and retired from the Mechanical Department in 1987 after 45 years of service.

Austin enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing, berry-picking and spending time at his cabin in Fortune Harbor. He was a wonderful storyteller throughout his life. In his youth, Austin was quite the piano player and throughout adulthood he enjoyed playing the harmonica. He loved to whistle and could often be heard whistling the soft, airy melodies of song.

Austin spent most of his adulthood as a member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 55, holding office of Exalted Ruler for several terms. Until recent years, Austin was the oldest, active member of the order. Until his passing, he was a Fourth Degree Knight with the Order of the Knights of Columbus.

Austin is predeceased by his wife Esther and son Terrence; parents Frank and Mary Walsh; infant brother Michael, sister Eileen (Morris); father-in-law Sylvester Courtney, Mothers-in-law Hannah and Mary Courtney; brothers-in-law Stanley Morris and Stephen Courtney; sisters-in-law Genevieve Courtney, Dot Courtney and Ann Courtney. He leaves to mourn children Patricia (Richard) Beaulieu, Linda (Terrence) Healey, Eileen (Leo) Davidson, Michael (Marie) Walsh, Geraldine (Barry) Hall, David (Theresa) Walsh, Deborah (Brent) Barrett, Donald (Darlene) Walsh, Catherine (Paul) Cantwell, Rose Mary Walsh, Austin (Barb) Walsh, Gerard (Tracey) Walsh and Paul (Susan) Walsh as well as 32 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Gerald (Clara) and numerous nephews and neices.

Austin’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at Kingsway Living where he resided prior to his recent health decline. He very much enjoyed living there and spoke highly of all with whom he shared his time.

The family would like to acknowledge the care and compassion bestowed upon him by the many health care professionals during his time at Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center, the Carmelite House and especially the Central Newfoundland Long-Term Care Home. For your kindness and compassion, we will be forever grateful.

In keeping with Austin’s wishes, together with his late wife Esther, a joint funeral and internment will take place at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Austin’s memory, to the Lionel Kelland Hospice.
