Obituary for Betty Anne McHugh (Delaney)

Betty Anne McHugh (Delaney)
Elizabeth (Betty) Anne McHugh (Delaney)
1941-2019

With profound sadness the family of Betty McHugh of Grand Falls-Windsor announce her peaceful passing on October 23rd, 2019 at the age of 77. Betty was born to John (Jack) and Patricia (Trix) Delaney on December 7th, 1941. She earned a B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1962 and went on to a teaching career in Grand Falls-Windsor, teaching at St. Catherine’s/Notre Dame Academy and St. Michael’s, where she retired in 1998. During her teaching career, Betty encouraged many students to participate in Public Speaking and chaperoned student trips to Europe on two occasions.

Betty married Eric McHugh in 1967, and they raised four children in the McHugh family home on West Street: John (Anne), Neil (Nicole), Joanne (Mav) and Patricia (Matt). In 2015 her precious Grandson Charles arrived and Betty stepped into the role of “Nanny” with pride and joy.

After Eric’s passing in 2012, Betty traveled far and wide, including Yellowknife, Chicago, Toronto (Oakville), Labrador, Halifax, New York City, Ireland, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and finally a river cruise from Amsterdam to Paris in June 2019. She was fiercely independent and made the most of her time with us.

Betty had a large circle of friends and as a lifelong resident of Grand Falls-Windsor, enjoyed being active in her community. She enjoyed 20 years with the Central Newfoundland Hospital Auxiliary (many serving as Secretary), was also a member of the Catholic Womens League, and often volunteered for various community events over the years, such as the Kiwanis Music Festival. Her “card club” best friends, coffee club, Book Club, Badger Lake friends, and special friends Freda and Arnold Edwards all held a very special place in her heart. Betty also leaves to mourn a large circle of relatives, especially cousin Mary Deorksen of Canberra, Australia and was a special Aunt to many members of the extended McHugh family.

Betty was kindness and grace personified, even in the face of illness. She taught us to laugh at ourselves, enjoy a good mystery, and sometimes even a good Scotch. She will be very sorely missed.

The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care provided to Betty during the course of her illness. Thank you to Dr. Lynette Powell, Registered Nurses Ruth Wells and Lori Kenny, her very special Home Support Workers Cathy and Joanne, Grand Falls Drug Store, and the Red Cross. We are forever grateful for the immense kindness and support of friends, family and colleagues during this difficult time.

Father Joseph Uy will conduct the funeral mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Grand Falls-Windsor on Monday, October 28th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Interfaith Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Michael Goodyear of Central Funeral Homes. Flowers graciously accepted or donations to Lionel Kelland Hospice.
