Obituary for Carl Douglas Gillard

Carl Douglas Gillard
February 7, 1943 - February 8, 2023

With heavy hearts, the family of Carl Gillard announce his passing at home in his beloved community of Springdale. Carl celebrated his 80th birthday this week and was a few days shy of celebrating his 57th wedding anniversary with the love of his life, Patricia. Throughout his life, Carl was known by many people throughout the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador for many personal and professional interests. His interests were exemplified by his skills as a building inspector with CMHC for 28 years and designer of up-words of 300 homes and structures in the Springdale area. Carl was widely known for his technical skills and knowledge of construction themed processes. A passion in recent years, which started as a hobby but maybe became an obsession, was a piece of art a.k.a. the boat called “Patricia”. When newsprint was more popular, a local paper labeled Carl a “Father of Heritage for the Northern Peninsula.” This was high praise for one of the founding members of the committee that created the Springdale Heritage Society. Carl was always up for a conversation; share a story; share his enthusiasm and love of history. A passion for Carl was the history of this corner of the province. Carl grew up in Springdale, worked in Gander, Corner Brook, Nova Scotia and St. John’s with CMHC and enjoyed his semi-retired years with Patricia in Springdale.

Leaving to mourn Carl with fond and loving memories are Patricia, sons Wade (Michelle) of St. John’s, Michael (Karin) of Las Vegas, and Christopher of St. John’s. Also, leaving to mourn are his two grand-daughters Anna and Kate, brother-in-law Roll (Rita) Roberts, sister-in-law Maxine (Richard) Tracey, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Rev. Larry Noseworthy of Grace United Church Springdale will conduct the funeral at the Central Funeral Homes Springdale on Monday February 13, 2023 at 2 pm. Following aquamation, visitation for family and friends will happen at Central Funeral Homes on Sunday, February 12th between 2 and 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Red Cross or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be welcome.

The family wish to extend their heart-felt gratitude to the Cancer Centre Grand Falls-Windsor, Green Bay Health Centre, Palliative Care/Community Health, Red Cross Grand Falls-Windsor and Dr. Todd Young. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Ms. Brenda Dicks and Ms. Dana Morrison for their kindness and compassion.
