Obituary for Dermot James Culleton

It is with great sadness that the family of Dermot James Culleton, (83), announces his passing on March 30, 2023 in Grand falls-Windsor. Dermot was born to William and Catherine Culleton on May 14, 1939, in St John’s. He is predeceased by his parents and eight older siblings.

Dermot is survived by his wife of 58 years, Verna (Budgell), his children, David and Nancy (Andrew Proudfoot), and his grandchildren Samantha and Colin.

After completing his education in pharmacy in the early 1960s, Dermot became the first pharmacist at the newly opened Grand Falls Hospital. It was there that he met his wife Verna, a registered nurse. Dermot was a pharmacist for over 50 years and along with Verna owned and operated drug stores, first in Fortune and later in Carmanville.

Dermot was passionate about the performing arts. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Choir for many years as well as other community singing groups and the Concert Band. He and Verna were also avid ballroom dancers and loved nothing better than a good Foxtrot or Newfie Waltz.

In 2005, he performed in Out of the Forest, a musical celebrating the centenary of Grand Falls -Windsor, playing the role of Joey Smallwood.

Dermot will be fondly remembered for his endless supply of “Dad jokes” and puns.

The family would like to thank the staff of Kingsway Living, Grand Falls-Windsor and the nurses, doctors, and staff of 3A, the ER and Carmelite House for their care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dermot’s memory may be made to the Exploits Valley SPCA.
