Obituary for Donald Winston Bennett

Donald W. Bennett
October 25th, 1931- April 25th, 2024 (92 years)

Don passed peacefully away in the loving arms of his family at the Kingsway Living GFW. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Ethel, of 60 years. He will be truly missed by his four girls, Sandra Wall (Mike) of Calgary, Heather Guest (Jeff) of Dartmouth, Carolyn Bennett of PEI, and Joy Rose (Paul) of GFW; 9 grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Vanessa, Jenny, Erin, Amy, Robert, Heidi and Jack; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alexa, Chloe, Madison, and one on the way. Left behind with loving memories are his brothers Roy, Lloyd, and Graham Bennett, and sister Alma Vollick. Pre-deceased by parents Max and Hettie Bennett; and siblings Marion Pye, Nelson, Howard, and Gerald Bennett. He also had a wide circle of friends and family who will miss him dearly.

Born in Green's Harbour, Trinity Bay, he devoted much of his professional life to teaching in many small communities around Newfoundland before settling in Grand Falls- Windsor, where he raised his family and continued to teach until retirement. He had a passion for gardening and farming. He looked forward to harvesting a full crop of vegetables for his family each year and had many memorable moments, including growing a 66-pound pumpkin, which won first prize. Don was also a real nature lover and enjoyed camping, canoeing, bird watching, trout fishing, and tree planting. When he wasn't teaching or gardening, he spent many hours crafting and woodworking, always creating.

Don was very active in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. He was a devoted member of the Singing Sidesmen and enjoyed fulfilling any other duties that benefited the church community. Throughout the years, he was involved in several boards, including the Mary March Museum, the library board, and the Bishop Falls Co-op. He also inspired many young adults as a Cadet leader.

With his positive outlook on life, he inspired many people. The smiles on people's faces kept him motivated to bring joy to those around him with a joke or funny story. His wisdom and passion led him to be the accomplished man he was.

We thank all the caring and compassionate staff and residents at the Kingsway Living GFW. We would also like to thank Ruth Wells, Dr. House, Dr. King, the (Central Health) emergency department and Central Funeral Homes for their compassion and support throughout this difficult time.

Cremation has taken place as per Don's wishes, and we will be celebrating his life at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in early September (exact date to be announced). Any donations are requested to be made to the communion fund in the care of the Anglican Church.
