DOROTHY STUART ROCKWOOD (TEMPLETON)
1928 - 2019

ROCKWOOD, Dorothy Stuart (Templeton) entered into rest at St. John’s in her 92nd year, surrounded by family, after challenging dementia for several years. Leaving to mourn are her daughter, Susan, Edmonton; two sons, Kenneth (Susan Howlett), Halifax; Peter (Beverly) St. John’s; eight grandchildren – Gareth (Helena), Angela (Dave), and Lynette; Michael (Brit) and James (Julia); Stuart (Astrid), Nadine (Brandon), and Erin; and great-grandson Maddoc. She is also survived by her sister Joyce Gillett, Toronto and brother John (Meera) Templeton, Winnipeg. Predeceased by her dear husband Roy (1998), infant son Gordon (1954) and parents The Rev Gordon and Gladys (Oke) Templeton.
Mom was born in Harbour Grace and grew up there and in Curling. She attended Spencer College in St. John’s and then Memorial College where she studied education. Following graduation she moved to Grand Falls, where she met Dad.
Mom and Dad lived in Grand Falls-Windsor for most of their married lives. There they had a prominent role in the Anglican Church, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. She taught at Grand Falls Academy for many years and founded the first hospital affiliated school at Central Newfoundland Hospital. After retirement they lived in Brampton ON and Halifax NS before moving to St. John’s in 1995.
Cremation has taken place. St. John’s visitation at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Monday, August 5th 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Funeral service at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Logy Bay Road on Tuesday, August 6th at 10:00 am. Grand Falls-Windsor visitation at the Chapel, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, August 7th at 9:30 am followed by inurnment in the Anglican Cemetery at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Girl Guides of Canada, 63 Roosevelt Avenue, St. John’s NL A1A 0E8 or the Health Care Foundation, Acute Care of the Elderly Program, 71 Goldstone Street, St. John’s NL A1B 5C3.
Although Mom lived her final years with dementia, she spent them contentedly in the loving care of family and friends, with special mention of Edie Nolan who visited her faithfully. We are especially grateful to the staff at Tiffany Village for their compassion and dedication to Mom’s care over the past seven years.
