Obituary for Elizabeth Gertrude Alaverdy (Sampson)

Elizabeth Alaverdy
November 20, 1932 - May 24, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Elizabeth (Betty) Alaverdy announce her passing at the Palliative Care Unit at the Carmelite (CNRHC) on May 24, 2022.

Betty was born in her family home on Suvla Road in Grand Falls on November 20, 1932. Following grade school, she attended nursing school at the Halifax Infirmary in Nova Scotia. She returned to Grand Falls and met and married her husband, Peter. Betty worked as a nurse for many years but took a break to raise her family. In later years, she took a refresher course and reentered the profession with a position on the Mental Health unit at the CNRHC.

Betty enjoyed life to the fullest! She spent many weekends at the cabin relaxing and feasting on lobster, her favorite food! She enjoyed the sunsets each evening over the bay and always took time to deeply “breathe in'' the fresh sea air! She loved a good game of cards with family and also enjoyed her regular game of bridge with her “bridge club”. In later years she spent many days golfing with Peter and seeing the sites on their many outings and drives. Visiting all the little “nooks and crannies'' around the island was a pleasurable pastime. Betty volunteered at the local food bank and was a devoted member of the Catholic Women’s League.

Betty loved to laugh and will forever be remembered for her strong spirit and quick wit! She could entertain a crowd with her humour and enjoyed socializing with friends and family. She had a strong faith and believed with God all things were possible. She thanked God daily for her many blessings.

Betty was a wonderful woman who took great pride in her family and enjoyed each day spent in the company of family during the many gatherings, celebrations, meals and fun times. She is predeceased by her parents, Jean (Way) and Peter Sampson and her husband Peter Alaverdy, siblings Mary Mozynski (Ted), Edna King, Jean Anderson (Johnny), Jack Sampson (Priscilla) and daughter Susan Alaverdy.

Left with fond and loving memories are her three children Elizabeth Glavine (Michael), Paul Alaverdy (Heather) and Maria Antle (Keith) all of whom reside in Grand Falls -Windsor. Also leaving to mourn are her 5 grandsons, Peter Glavine (Michelle), Adam Glavine (Erica), Michael Antle (Jessica), Kyle Alaverdy, Matthew Alaverdy (Tram) and 4 great grandchildren Lauren Glavine, Phillip Glavine, Patrick Glavine, Samuel Glavine. Also leaving to mourn are her many beloved nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The Family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff from 3A and 3B at the CNRHC. As well, a thank-you to the fantastic staff at Holletts Retirement Home for their years of care, kindness and friendship.

Public Visitation will take place at Central Funeral Homes on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9.
Father Tom Duffenais will conduct the funeral mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 2:00 P.M.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Ryan Peddle of Central Funeral Homes.
