Obituary for Elizabeth McCann (Lane)

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the Carmelite House in GFW, Elizabeth (Betty) McCann. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents Stewart and Nellie (Peaty) Lane and parents-in-law Thomas and Gertrude McCann . Left to mourn are her loving husband Patrick, dedicated sister Marguerite, adoring nephew Jamie and his wife Joanne and son, Leland, sisters-in-law Marie (Kevin, deceased) Stamp and Margaret(Donald) Harris.

The essence of Elizabeth's being can be best characterized by her love of family. Her husband of 54 years, Pat was the apple of her eye and the playful banter between them was entertaining to all who knew them. Rarely would you see one without the other. Her sister and best friend, Marguerite was a constant in her life. They shared a lifetime of mutual dedication and love, always there for each other whenever needed. Elizabeth doted on her nephew, Jamie and later eagerly welcomed his wife Joanne and their son Leland into the fold.

In choosing her career path, Elizabeth leaned in to her passion for helping others, especially the vulnerable and those in need. She pursued her dream of becoming a registered nurse and completed her studies at the Grace Hospital School of Nursing in St.John's in 1962. Returning to her hometown of Grand Falls, Elizabeth first accepted a job at the Botwood College Hospital, followed by the Lady Northcliff Hospital, and then relocated to the new Central Newfoundland Regional Hospital from where she retired. Elizabeth particularly enjoyed her time as head nurse in the Nursery where many a new Mom benefited from her gentle and reassuring ways.

When not working, Elizabeth and Pat enjoyed time at their cabin in Winter Tickle. Her enjoyment of cabin life was inspired by her father Stewart who delighted in organizing annual outings to Eastport and Salvage for what became treasured family Labour Day weekends.

Elizabeth will be remembered by all who encountered her for her easy-going ways, her kind and gentle spirit and her infectious laugh. Never wanting to be a bother, her compassionate nature ensured she put the needs of others well ahead of her own.

The family will say their final goodbyes to Elizabeth at a later date. For now, condolences will be accepted on the Central Funeral Homes website as we remember the life of a beloved wife, sister, aunt and friend.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at the Carmelite House for their exceptional care and attention, her life-long friend, Imelda Head who was with her till the end, and all who have supported us in any way. Your kindness will be forever appreciated.
