Obituary for Ernest Alfred Robbins

Ernest Robbins
1937-2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest Robbins, husband of the late Evelyn Marsh; father to Glenn Robbins (Eric Pelletier) and Peter Robbins (Jackie Howard), beloved grandfather of Shannon and Mark, brother to Kay Sears, Lorne Robbins and the late Claude Robbins, son of the late Alfred Robbins and Edna Goodyear of Lumsden North.

Ernest grew up in Lumsden and then moved to St. John’s to attend Memorial University of Newfoundland where he entered the Engineering program. While at university, he met his future wife Evelyn from Point Leamington who was training to be a nurse. They married in the fall of 1959 just in time for them to move to Halifax where Ernest would complete his Engineering degree. After Ernest graduated, they moved to Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario where they lived and worked for 2 years. They then returned to Newfoundland after Ernest accepted a job to work at the Price Pulp and Paper mill in Grand Falls, which has been their home ever since.
For many years Ernest was active in the Grand Falls Curling club where he introduced his two boys to the sport. After his retirement his love of the outdoors led him to become active in the Corduroy Brook Enhancement Association.

During the early 1970’s he, and a few of his friends, built cottages in an area of the north-east coast in a sheltered bay called Western Arm. He enjoyed his cottage for over 40 years which provided the base for many boat and snowmobile trips. Later in life he would purchase a cottage on Crooked Lake where he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

He enjoyed doting on his grandchildren Shannon and Mark. He was only too happy to provide rides to their various activities and where possible cheered for them from the sidelines. They were very important to him and a huge part of his life.

A celebration of Ernest’s life will be held on a future date.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lionel Kelland Hospice.
