Obituary

Evelyn Dwyer
1924-2020

Vina Olivia Evelyn Dwyer (nee Martin) aka Mom, Nanny, Nanny D., Great-Nanny was born July 24, 1924 in Little Heart’s Ease and passed peacefully away at Hollett’s Retirement Home in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on April 14, 2020. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, William Harold Dwyer; her sons John and Russell; grandson Richard Fagan; and great-grandsons Donavon Gallant and Gavin Gallant. Left with the best memories are her children; Bill (Sheila), Clar (Sarah), Patricia (Frank), Carmel (Harry), and Maureen (Phil); her 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; special friends Gerald and Faith Champion; as well as a large circle of friends worldwide.
A wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, Evelyn lived a long and interesting life. She was forward thinking and industrious. She inspired many people to be the best they could be including her family, many relatives and other people who entered her world at different times during her life. She was always there to lift us up when we needed it and help us navigate through life’s trials and successes.

There was never a challenge from which she would back down. A lover of gardening, bird watching, sewing, knitting and cooking, she taught us many skills and life lessons. She was an eternal optimist who believed anything was possible with hard work and commitment. Left alone at 52 years of age, she navigated through her life with style, grace and integrity.

She valued education and spent her life learning new things and new skills which she was determined to pass on to anyone who was receptive to learning from her.

Our mother was a very spiritual person whose faith and religion guided her through life. She was a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish. She did not stray from her moral compass which she used to navigate every aspect of her life. Her determination, ability to work and her endless energy are a part of her legacy to us as a family. She never faced a challenge without rising to the occasion to overcome it. She had an amazing capacity to connect with people, and she had a very positive and deliberate effect on them. Our mother’s spirit will live on in the people she touched and loved throughout her life. She had a lasting impact on all who entered her life. She was loved and will be missed.

The staff of Hollett’s Retirement Home are an exceptional group of individuals who, with compassion, love and devotion took care of our mother. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and all our love.

We know what love is because love is our mother.
