Obituary for Felicitas Austria (Medina)

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Dr. Felicitas (Feli) Medina Austria (also a dentist and anesthesiologist) announce her passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on January 2, 2024 at the age of 89 years old.

A friend said that Feli was a true servant of faith and lived it in all she did. Her Christian walk was a simple and quiet way that warmly encompassed those she took “under her wing”. She kept an open door and a hot cup of coffee ready for any and all who needed an ear to listen or an eye to help see and think about things from a different perspective.

The circle of friends she had made in her lifetime was a large and interesting group that included every age, colour, belief, lifestyle, background, experience and what have you. She cherished and loved each of them, and considered them a blessing.

Family and extended family were deeply important to her. She made great effort to know as many of her nieces, nephews and their children as she could.

Feli had many interests and was a lifelong learner. Her interests crossed many subjects such as community and world affairs, science, medicine, literature, philosophy, music, art, theatre, ballet, and basketball to name a few. Being in her 80’s didn’t stop her from refreshing her chemistry skills to help a friend who was upgrading.

She was an avid and passionate gardener. Together with her husband, Jess, they were known and respected for the beautiful flowers, vegetables and gardens they cultivated and the amount of knowledge they possessed. Her cooking skills were just as renowned and often many of us got German butter cookies at Christmas, one of her many specialties. And children…how she loved them and how they deeply loved her.

Her sense of humor was infectious and she had the sweetest smile. She always enjoyed a good challenge and loved a game of Scrabble.

Feli was an active member of the R.C. Sacred Heart Parish Church in St. Patrick’s for many years living her faith quietly through prayer, ministry within the church and to others, and in any way she felt God needed her. She was an old member of the Women’s Institute and active with Girl Guides of Canada while her daughter was in the program.

Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Jesus “Jess” Austria, her parents Ambrocio & Eusebia Medina of Munoz, Neuva Ecija, Philippines, and her siblngs.

Left with fond and loving memories is her daughter Jessica (Bruce Henderson) of Ashburn, VA. Also leaving to mourn grandchildren Samuel & Alexander, sister-in-law Amelia (Mey), Sherry Adams, Denzil & Betty-Jean Reid, Joan Rowsell, and many other “children” who’ve grown up under Feli’s wings.

There will be a visitation at Central Funeral Home in Springdale on Sunday, January 7, 2024 between 2:00 and 4:00 PM. A Catholic wake will be held at the Sacred Heart Parish Church in St. Patrick’s at 7:00 PM.

THE FUNERAL MASS WILL BE HELD IN THE SUMMER OF 2024. DETAILS WILL BE POSTED WHEN FINALIZED.

The family would like to thank the many people who helped care for Feli over the last sixteen months. A special thank you to Dr. Todd Young of Springdale and the Community Health nurses at GBHCC, Brenda Dicks, as well as Lisa Edison and Kathleen Taylor. A very special thank you to Dr. Samba and the nurses of Surgical 2A at Grand Falls Hospital, and to the Restorative Care Team at the Western Regional Health Centre in Corner Brook. Thank you to the Exploits Home Care Agency and Feli’s girls for making her wish to come home one more time a reality. She will be greatly missed.
