Obituary for Hazel Violet Head (Butt)

Hazel Violet Head (Butt)
HAZEL VIOLET HEAD
1919 – 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Hazel Violet (Butt) Head announce her peaceful passing in her 101st year, March 7, 2020, at the Carmelite House, Palliative Care Unit, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.

Hazel was born and resided in Heatherton, NL. As a young woman, she moved to Howley and worked as a store clerk. Upon returning home to Heatherton she worked at Ronald Butt’s general store. Hazel was active with Heatherton United Church and was a founding member of the United Church Women’s Association. She was a lover of music, playing the piano or organ by air. Even at 100 years old, Hazel played the piano for the seniors over Christmas 2019 at the Golden Years. In Hazel’s younger years, she was often called upon to sing solos for many young couples at their marriage ceremonies. She loved to do fancy, delicate embroidery work, knit and play cards. Most of all, Hazel was a great hostess who always made you welcome and feel at home. Lunch with tea and a sweet was a must for anyone visiting. Nobody left hungry and she could often be heard saying, “that was good, even if I do have to say so myself” or “no fuss, no muss”.

Hazel and her late husband, Naaman, moved to Grand Falls-Windsor in 1992 to reside with their son, George and family. At the age of 85, she made her own decision to move to the Golden Years Estate where she resided for the past 15 years.

She will be forever lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Patsy. Also left with many fond memories are her stepdaughter, Zeta Hulan, step-daughter-in-law, Alice Head, brother-in-law, Kenneth Head, and her nieces and nephews who always visited. Nan/Old Nan will always hold a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren, Donald (Sharon) Hulan, Aneitra Head (Larry Pan), Aaron (Tonya) Head, great-grandchildren, Evan Hulan (Chrystal Lee Butt), Grant (April) Hulan, Chloe Head, Lexi Head, and great-great-grandson, Griffin Hulan.

Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Wilhelmina (Forsey) and John Norris Butt, Naaman, her loving husband of 51 years, stepson, Norman, step-son-in-law, John Hulan, sisters, Roxanna Hudson, Mabel Snow, brother, Ronald Butt, and stepbrothers, John MacDonald and Donald MacDonald.

Cremation has already taken place as per Hazel’s request. The funeral service will be at the Heatherton United Church and inurnment will follow in Heatherton, NL at a later date.

We, the family, would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Golden Years Estate, management and staff for being part of her family for the past 15 years. The medical and nursing staff of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Care Facility and the Palliative Care Unit at Carmelite House. A special thank-you to Julie Ball, LPN (family friend), Kendra Hutchings, Nurse Manager, Ruth Wells, Palliative Care Nurse, Vicki Cramm, Liaison Nurse, Bill and Linda Hudson, Sharon and Ian Bell for your support and love, and Reverend Kim Waite, Memorial United Church, Grand Falls-Windsor, for your visits.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heatherton United Church, Heatherton, NL.

Cremation entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes.
