It is with deep sadness that the family of Jim Dobson announce his passing on April 11, 2024.

Jim was predeceased by his son, Keith; his mother Keziah and stepfather Roy Taylor; half-brother John Dobson, brother-in-law Geoff Seymour, grandparents Jenny and Freeman Lake, and parents-in-law William and Fannie Whalen.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 55 years, Beulah; daughter Susan, son Peter (Nicole) and granddaughters Sarah (Brady Pike), Jordan, and Paige; step-siblings Phyllis Seymour, Joan (Frank) Ricketts, Margaret (Bill) Pritchett, Marion (Ted) Vincent, Bill (Kathy) Taylor, Roger (Daisy) Taylor; half-siblings Margaret Greenley, Kim (Al) Vermeulen, and half sister-in-law Linda Dobson; brothers and sisters-in-law Angela (Brian) Sinclair, Melvin (Juliet) Whalen, Thelma (Ross) Elliott, Allister (Hazel) Whalen, and Ruby (Edward) Kelly; nieces and nephews; special friends Eugene Osmond and Kevin Smith; and a wide circle of friends.

Jim was born in Fortune on the Burin Peninsula where he received his early education, and completed Grade XII at Prince of Wales College in St. John’s. After two years teaching, Jim attended Memorial University and graduated with a BA, BEd. He later completed a Master’s Degree in Geography and a Master’s of Education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. He began his teaching career in Stephenville where he spent one year. He then went to Deer Lake for two years and Botwood for one year before settling in Grand Falls-Windsor for the remainder of his career. He spent ten years as Vice-Principal at Grand Falls Academy and two years as Program Coordinator with the Exploits Valley Integrated School Board. Throughout his career he was involved in the local NLTA Branch and the Social Studies Special Interest Council. He was also Newfoundland’s representative on the National Multicultural Council. He was a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association, serving as President of the Central Division, a member of the Provincial Executive,
Vice-President, and President.

In the community, Jim was a member of the Memorial United Church and really enjoyed serving on various committees and singing in the Men’s Choir. He was a member of the Grand Falls-Windsor Heritage Society and assisted in the Kiwanis Music Festival. Jim especially enjoyed special family celebrations, and spending time with his children and granddaughters. Jim and Beulah explored Newfoundland in their motor home, and he especially enjoyed meeting up with friends in various communities. He also enjoyed their 16 years of going to Florida in the winter.
