Obituary for Joan Linda Ellsworth (Wall)

Linda Joan Ellsworth, Joan, (nee Wall), passed away unexpectedly March 19, 2023 at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, NL at the age of 73. Joan was born and raised in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, and after a short time away in St. John’s and Toronto, she returned to her hometown where she continued her life’s adventure with her loving and devoted husband Winston Ellsworth. Together they raised their daughter Robyn, and their household also included Joan’s parents Henry and Myrtle Wall and her aunt Myrtle Young, by whom she is predeceased. She is also predeceased by her niece Amanda Ivany.

Joan nurtured her loved ones with delicious home cooked meals and the best baked treats. Many had a special dessert she lovingly prepared for them annually. And she comforted those experiencing loss or sickness with her wonderful dishes. Her shelves and cupboards were filled with recipes books, ingredients and the tools necessary to feed all our tummies and souls.

Joan also enjoyed being creative through crafting and as a child she played the piano. Other favourite activities included reading, gardening, and watching her beloved British tv shows, including Coronation Street. Joan was also a member of TOPS for many years. She and Robyn loved to go shopping together, especially when they visited Joan’s sister Donna in St. John’s and later in Nova Scotia, and in British Columbia when Robyn moved there. Joan and Wins loved to travel, visiting family and friends across Canada and attending all their nieces and nephews weddings. They were often joined by their dearest friends Des and Sandra Arnold as they camped around NL, having a lot of fun together while taking in all the historic sites and cultural events.

She was an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church all her life, as a member of the choir, ACW, and the craft group. She was the Memorial Fund secretary for many years and helped with every special church event. Joan was also a member of a cookie swap group, a rotating group of women who met at church and shared baking and friendship at Christmas (and all year through) for 15+ years.

Her faith in God held steadfast, only growing stronger as the year’s passed. Reading Joan’s prayer list, she cared for everyone, wanting happiness, good mental and physical health, peace, love, full cupboards, warm homes, mended hearts, and safety for us all. No one in her family, friend group, community or the world, was ever forgotten or left out. Joan’s thoughtful and giving nature led her to volunteer at the local food bank, and other causes, and she donated to various charities.

Joan took great care of her parents and Aunt Myrt during their remaining days. She delighted in spoiling her grand nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was just simply the best wife, mother, sister, aunt, niece, godmother, and friend. If you knew her, you were very lucky and blessed. She leaves behind her husband Wins, daughter Robyn, siblings Donna (Bob) Wesson and Mac (Erma) Wall, her best friend Sandra Arnold, several nieces and nephews and their children, cousins and other family members and many dear friends and her church family. We will all hold her close in our hearts and minds forever.

Joan’s visitation is 7-9 p.m., March 21, at Central Funeral Homes in Grand Falls-Windsor, and her funeral will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Grand Falls-Windsor, 11 a.m., Wed., March 22, 2023. A reception will be held in the church hall following the service. If you would like to do something in Joan’s memory please make a donation to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Memorial Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Or volunteer in your community. And always tell your family and friends you love them. She did.
