Obituary for Joseph Patrick Beresford

JOSEPH BERESFORD
1947 - 2021

Passed peacefully away after a short illness at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, in his 73rd year.

Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Blanche (Randell); sister, Kathleen; brother, Martin; sister-in-law, Margaret Pelley; and brothers-in-law, Edward Kelly, Patrick Kelly and Felix Kelly. Left with fond and loving memories are his wife, Jacqueline (Kelly); sons, Mark (Karen) and Michael; grandchildren, Robyn (Joshua) and Patrick; brother, Desmond (Louise) of Grand Falls-Windsor; sister, Agnes (Don) White of Sandy Cove; sisters-in-law, Anita Kelly (Catherine) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Loretta Kelly of Bay Bulls, and Margaret Kelly of Halifax; brothers-in-law, Dennis Healey and Lewis Pelley, both of Grand Falls-Windsor, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Joe was a heavy duty mechanic by trade and worked all over Newfoundland and Labrador. He worked at the base in Goose Bay for 4 years with the Ministry of Transport, and from there he transferred to Gander, where he raised his family and stayed until his retirement at 50 years of age. He was a hard worker and had a generous nature, always ready to lend a hand.

When Joe was very young, he lost his hearing, and it became worse over time from work industrial noise. Although he had to retire early, it didn’t slow him down. He had cochlear surgery implants, and they served him well. Being able to hear birds sing or a tune on the car radio for the first time was amazing to him.

Joe approached life with practicality and sometimes a wicked sense of humor. His wife Jackie of 51 years was his rock - they lived good, faith-filled lives and were devoted to each other. He had a passion for hunting and fly fishing, spending time in the woods with his brother Des. He loved to get away to their cabin on weekends, especially when their grandkids would visit, taking them boating and fishing. That was his happy place.

We, his family, are deeply grateful to the physicians, nurses and all staff members who cared for Joe, at 2A and Palliative care. Also, our very special friends Bud and Liz Dawe who have always been there.

To honor his memory, donations may be made to Newfoundland Hard of Hearing Association.
