Obituary for Joseph Michael Walsh

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Joseph Michael Walsh announce his passing at the Palliative Care Unit of the Carmelite House in Grand Falls-Windsor on February 28th, 2023 at the age of 78. He was employed by Abitibi Price until his retirement.

Joseph was born on April 9th 1944 in Coachman’s Cove to Michael and Cecilia Walsh where he lived as a child until he moved to Bishop’s Falls.

Later in life, Joe became a member of The Salvation Army Bishop’s Falls Corps NL. It was here that he met Ruth Budgell, fell in love and they were married on October 23, 2010. Joe enjoyed participation in the Men’s Fellowship as well as many other activities at the church. He was enrolled as a Soldier on April 12th 2009 and was always happy and eager to greet everyone at the door. Their door was always opened to anyone who wanted to stop by for a visit, a cup of tea and snack. There was always a story to share and great belly laugh before you left.

From a young age Joe was a very active outdoorsman, from cutting wood to fishing and hunting. He loved his time on the Exploits River where he always said it was peaceful. Joe and his girls spent many happy times in the woods trouting and ice fishing for smelts. He was also a well known dart player who enjoyed playing in the local leagues as well as competitive play across the island.

Joseph was predeceased by his first wife Susan Hannaford, his parents Michael and Cecilia Walsh, his stepfather Lester Hoffe, and siblings Patrick, Margaret, Anastasia, Agnes, Carmel, Bridget, and Andrew.

Left to mourn are his wife of 12 wonderful years, Ruth Budgell Walsh, his three daughters, Andrea Pearce (Conrad), Joanne Gaslard (Ron) and Stacey Squirrell (Matt), 7 grandchildren, Curtis Pearce (Justine), Donovan Pearce (Taylor), Brady Pearce, Susanne Gaslard (Keith), Ronda Gaslard (Corey), Robert Walsh (Brianna), Ronna Walsh (Thomas), 5 great-grandchildren, Max, Ben, Owen, Olivia, and Scarlette, his siblings, Madeline Brothers, Elizabeth Parsley (Robert), Thomas (Vera), Kay Gentry (Fred), and Gary (Naomi).
