Obituary for Judy Melda Marie Rimmer (Burt)

It is with deep sadness, the Rimmer and Burt families announce the passing of Judy Melda Marie Burt Rimmer, on October 9, 2023 at Rattling Brook at the age of 64.

Judy was born on the first day of summer - June 21, 1959 at Springdale Cottage Hospital - the 6th child of Cassey and Lloyd Burt. She would acquire five more siblings in subsequent years, putting her smack dab in the middle! Judy grew up in Rattling Brook/King's Point and was truly a friend to all - male, female, age did not matter. She loved being outdoors. In her opinion, life should be fun and everyone should be involved!

After finishing high school, she followed many of her older siblings to Brampton, Ontario. It was there she met Harrison Rimmer who would become her husband. They came back to Newfoundland and after their daughter, Erin was born, they returned to Ontario where their son, Jerry was born in 1985. She made Ontario home and in 2012 decided to move back to Rattling Brook to care for Mom and make it their permanent home.

Judy leaves behind a legacy of love. She is survived by her husband, Harrison, son, Jerry and his wife Tanis, and her pets Boo, Bob and Griffin. She was predeceased by their precious daughter, Erin in 1993; Dad 2009, Mom 2013, sister Jeannette 1987; and brother Tony 2022.

Those left to mourn also include her siblings and siblings in-law: Eldon (Elvia) ON, Janice (Wayne) AB, Ron (Dale) NL, Herwin (Pearl) ON, Daphne (John) NL, Marden (Adele) ON, Dwayne (Valerie) AB, Darlene (Ken) AB, Sharon (Don) NL, Wayne (Debbie) USA, Shawn (Jackie) NL, Shelley ON, also many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and as well great- great nephew, and nieces, numerous friends - local, across Canada and around the world.

Over the years, Judy collected hundreds of books. Her retirement goals of being 'lazy' included reading and making quilts. Sadly, her eyesight diminished greatly, making both of these goals an impossibility. She would jokingly say: "There's just something about you... !” She had a unique way of saying exactly what she thought without appearing mean or judgemental. Known for her trademark wit and fluent frankness, everybody got to enjoy Judy's humour and unwavering kindness; she had a way of touching the lives of everyone she encountered. In recent days, many of her quiet acts of generosity have come to light and there have been so very many people who have expressed their love for her, their trust in her - and always her laughter was mentioned.

She was a second mom to many, especially her family, and she had an incredible ability to care for those she loved. She could totally be stubborn and would definitely disagree with every word that’s written here. If Judy could have it her way, she would bring no attention to herself whatsoever! Ironically, she made it all about Judy when she unexpectedly left this world on Thanksgiving Day.

As we bid farewell to Judy, we remember a loving and caring wife, mom, sister, mentor and friend. Her memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of really knowing her. The loss of Judy is immeasurable, but so is the amount of love and laughter she has left behind.

Abiding by Judy's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Friends and family are encouraged to celebrate Judy's life in their own way. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Judy's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
