Obituary

JULIA MARIE AYLWARD
1938 - 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Julia Marie Aylward announce her passing at the Heritage Square Retirement Home, Long Pond, on May 25, 2019 at the age of 81.

Julia is predeceased by her parents, Martha and William Aylward, brother, Kevin Aylward, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Butler, brother-in-law, Dennis Hickey, and life-long friend, Regina Murphy.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her sisters, Eileen and Anne Aylward, brother, Louis Aylward, sister-in-law, Donna Aylward, nephews, Mark (Jill) Hickey, David (Anna) Hickey, Tony Hickey (Natasha Sparkes), Johnny Butler (Diane), nieces, Heidi (Jamie) Boyd, Wanda (Garry) Malone, great-nieces, Maggie and Abby Malone, Alexis Hickey, Rachel and Lauren Sparkes, Sammy and Katie Butler, great-nephews, Parker and Dylan Hickey, William and Thomas Boyd, Kyle, Ethan, and Eric Butler, as well as a large circle of friends.

Julia was born to parents Martha and William Aylward on January 23, 1938 at Knight’s Cove, Bonavista Bay. At an early age, she moved to Buchans with her family, where she attended St. Theresa’s Academy. After graduation from Grade Eleven, she entered the St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1956. Upon receiving her R.N. in 1959, she worked for a short period of time at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. She then moved to Toronto, where she did a post-graduate course in obstetrics at St. Michael’s Hospital. She nursed in Toronto for ten years. She then moved to New Jersey, USA, for the remainder of her career.

Upon retirement, she moved back home to Newfoundland and Labrador, where she spent the remaining eleven years of her life.

Julia thoroughly enjoyed nursing the elderly, to the extent that after retirement, she sought employment with Compassion Care in St. John’s, where she worked for a number of years and made many friends. Many of those families kept in touch with her in appreciation of her kindness to their loved ones. They remained friends right up until her recent illness.

As an active member of St. Clare’s Auxiliary Association, she volunteered at the St. Clare’s Gift Shop for many years. She loved this work and was very kind to anyone who needed an ear. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles. Her favorite TV show was Jeopardy and she frequently knew the answers to many of the questions.

Julia was loved and will be fondly missed by all those who knew her.

Julia, or Dewa as I called her, was my babysitter when we lived in Buchans. I was only a young child when she looked after me but my parents and I often talked about her. so sorry for your loss.

I was so sad to hear of Julia's passing as she was so close with my Aunt Regina Murphy and we became very close during my time in St. John's when my aunt was ill last year. Julia gave us all strength and comfort during my aunt's illness and eventual passing in November. She was with us when my aunt went to heaven and I am sure they are together again in God's company. I was fortunate to have a wonderful visit with her in early May of this year. She was like family to us and I will miss her so much. My sincere condolences to all her family.

So sorry to hear of Julia's passing. Julia was my Godmother and a dear friend to my mother Cecilia, I am so saddened to hear the news. She always had a treat and a smile for me as a young boy growing up when she would visit and later always made a point to reconnect when I would come home to visit. I will truly miss her warm smile. My sincere condolences .
