Obituary for Lydia Moody Davis (Phillips)

Lydia Moody Davis (Phillips)
LYDIA MOODY (PHILLIPS) DAVIS
1934 - 2019

Passed away peacefully at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, St. John’s, NL, surrounded by family on November 29, 2019 at the age of 85 years. Lydia is predeceased by her husband, Charles, son, Charlie, parents, Levi and Georgina Phillips, brothers, William and Edwin Phillips, and sisters, Lucy Warren, Emma Smith, and Daphne Noseworthy.

Leaving behind with fond and loving memories to celebrate her life are daughters Jocelyn (Walter Bourgeois), and Karen (Jim French), daughter-in-law Michalann Davis, 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sister Eleanor Smith, brother-in-law Rex Noseworthy, sisters-in-law Betty Mercer (John), Marguerite Mazereeuw, Leona Davis, as well as a large circle of family and friends.

Lydia was born in Burgoyne’s Cove, Trinity Bay and moved to Windsor with her family as a teenager. It was there she met Charles Davis and they were married in 1951. They settled in Grand Falls to raise their three children. Sadly, Charles died at age 32 of heart disease, leaving Lydia to raise their family on her own, but she had the support of her parents, Levi and Georgina Phillips.

Lydia worked in the retail sector for 35 years, retiring at age 65 from Riffs Department Store, Grand Falls-Windsor.

Lydia enjoyed walking, and did so for many years, until this activity was curtailed by arthritis. She thoroughly loved the comforts of her own home, preferring to bake, cook, and of course, clean, rather than attend social outings. Lydia always welcomed the company of family and friends into her home to enjoy a cup of tea and a good laugh.

Lydia’s last four years were complicated by hip replacement surgery and the onset of dementia. As her dementia progressed, she needed home care and then long term care at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home. It is there she spent the last year of her life.

The family would like to thank Natasha Ivany, Lorie Curtis, and Verna Parsons for their kindness to mom and for the exceptional in-home care they provided.

Many thanks to the staff of St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, in particular the staff of 2 North/South, the Recreation Department, and the Music Therapist for the compassion and care shown to mom during her stay.

Cremation has already taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Central Funeral Homes Chapel in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Rev. Jeff Blackwood will conduct the funeral service at Central Funeral Homes Chapel on Monday, December 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at the Interfaith Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes.
