Obituary for Marie Weir (Jones)

It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Marie Weir (neé Wilhemina Belle Marie Jones) announce her passing at the Valley Vista Senior Citizen’s Home in Springdale, Newfoundland, in the late evening of July 4th at the age of 95 years.

Loved beyond measure, Marie was an extraordinarily devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and a friend to all who knew her. First employed by her father at S.T. Jones’ and Son Ltd., she supported her husband – whom she adored – throughout their life together in many business ventures, including Green Bay Transport Ltd., Little Bay Islands Heating Services, and Weir’s Fibreglass. Despite many health challenges, she lost neither her smile, nor her Christian faith. She remained an ardent church member, supporter, and lay-reader, when needed, as well as an active school and community volunteer. She loved the earth and every creature on it: humans and animals alike; she loved the trees and the flowers, the sound of church bells, strawberry ice-cream, and a good game of Scrabble.

Marie is predeceased by her parents Sidney and Elsie (neé Pike) Jones, parents-in-law James and Elsie Weir, brother George, and her precious son, Jerry, as well as a number of dearly loved and missed brothers and sisters-in-law.

Left to mourn – but also to celebrate and lovingly remember – are her husband Wilbert, daughter Carol (Dennis), sister Gwen, daughter-in-law Debbie; granddaughters Amanda (Paul), Ashley, and Chantelle (Frank); and a wide circle of family and friends gained through nearly a century of life well-lived in the service of God, family, and community.

Major Gerald Lacey will conduct the funeral service at the Salvation Army Springdale Citadel on Sunday, July 9th at 2 pm. Interment will be at the Salvation Army Cemetery in Springdale, NL.

Flowers graciously accepted by the family or donations may be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Ken Goodyear of Central Funeral Homes.
