Obituary for Reginald Dorman Butt

Reginald Dorman Butt born April 19th, 1942 in Grand Falls, NL passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2021 at the Health Science Center, St. John’s surrounded by his family. Reg is predeceased by his parents Eldon and Stella (nee Gill) Butt and in laws George and Edna Burt.

Left to mourn, the love of his life and wife of 54 years, Eileen (Burt); daughter Kimberley Browne (Philip), son Kent (Angela); grandchildren Laura, Brandon, Ethan, Seth and Ella; brothers Roy (Rita), Claude (Shirley), Bill; sisters Margaret Diamond (Calvin), Shirley Bauch (Irvin), Barbara Hughes, Rosemary Butt (Hubert) and sister in law Edith Richards. Also left to mourn are many nieces and nephews, a large circle of friends and cabin buddies, especially Albert and Leona and his coffee buddies, especially Scott.

Reg spent his early working life as a Power Engineer at Abitibi Consolidated and retired after 38 years. Following his retirement, he went to work at Newfoundland Styro where he did summer relief for ten years. While Reg enjoyed his career, he lived his life for his family, friends and the outdoors.

Eileen was the love of his life and partner in everything he did. He doted on her and supported her in all her church involvement. Her friends lovingly called her “The Queen.” They enjoyed many hours picking berries, spending time at their cabin and taking road trips around the island as well as down south. They thoroughly enjoyed a good run on ski doo or quad and stopping to take in the scenery while eating the lunch Eileen packed. Reg especially enjoyed her molasses buns.

Reg always loved to help out when the men from the church were doing a catering event. He and Vince cooked many turkeys together and he thoroughly enjoyed this. He was always willing to do the dishes after the catering since he was so used to doing them at home!

Reg’s children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and he was so proud of their accomplishments. He loved any excuse to take them out to eat (especially if he had a coupon) and Kim was often the recipient of a dessert. Him and Eileen shared many clubhouse sandwiches at the Valley Restaurant.

Reg loved the game of hockey and was a fixture at the stadium. He took so much pleasure in watching his grandchildren play and loved sharing a plate of fries and watching the Cataracts with Kent (unless they were losing). He was the best hockey dad and pop ever!

Many people have been touched by his kindness and generosity and it didn’t matter if he knew you or not. If he knew someone was in need, he was the first one there to help even in his sickest hours. He was the epitome of kindness.

Reg will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will happen at a later date. Donations can be made in his memory to Memorial United Church, Grand Falls-Windsor.

We especially want to thank Reverend Kim from Memorial United Church for her consonant support during Reg’s illness. We also want to thank the nurses and doctors at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center and the Health Science Center (4 A North) for all their amazing care.
