Obituary for Sharon Ann Maidment (McDonald)

Sharon Ann McDonald Maidment 1956 – 2023

Following a cancer diagnosis she faced with optimism and courage, Sharon passed away on Sunday with loved ones by her side.

Sharon’s family was her first love and the thing she treasured most in life – her husband of 50 years Jim and her two boys, Michael (Leanne) and Mark (Yani). However, it was her 4 grandchildren; Emmanuelle, Gabriel, Ernesto, and Eduardo, who were her pride and joy.

The oldest of her family, Sharon had 5 sisters and 1 brother spread across the country. Her siblings, together with their own families, were very important to her and a source of love and support throughout her illness.

Sharon received incredible support from friends during her illness, however, the absolute love and support from Terri Lynn Ricketts was meaningful in a way that is difficult to describe.

Sharon was easy to love. Soft spoken and warm, her charm was infectious and drew people in. She was thoughtful and humble, putting other people before herself. Just days before her death, she was building care packages for other cancer patients, an example of her endless selflessness.

Sharon loved to travel and see new places, though her favourite place was in front of a warm campfire with friends. She was a prolific knitter, her beautiful sweaters, hats, and blankets were prized by those fortunate enough to receive one. Sharon was an avid reader, consuming books with incredible pace, resting her hands from her knitting needles. She was also a storyteller -her soft tone and cadence were a perfect soundtrack for the news of the day.

Sharon will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and her community. She left a mark on everyone who knew her, and we were better for it.

Sharon’s family would like to acknowledge and thank the health care professionals at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, specifically the teams at the Cancer Unit and Health and Community Services. Your love, care, and compassion have helped to make a difficult journey a little less so.

We would request no flowers please. If you would like to do something to honour Sharon, we would ask that you consider making a gift to the Cancer Care Foundation to support the Cancer Unit to help build the capacity of the unit to continue to care for local cancer patients. https://cancercarefoundation.ca/
