Obituary for Susannah Laura Young

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Susie Laura Young announce her passing at the Valley Vista Seniors’ Complex in Springdale on November 8, 2022 at the age to 91. Susie was a member of Beachside Pentecostal Church for more than 55 years.

She is predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Frank; her parents Jethro and Nora Cull; sisters Mildred (Pastor Bruce) Harnum, Evelena Cull, and Lydia Cull; nieces Beverley Harnum and Joy Young; parents-in-law Daniel and Winnifred Young; brothers-in-law Roy (Malviny) Young, Ward (Edna) Young, Ross (Edith) Young, Ford (Claudia) Young, Danks Cole, and Clayton Perry.
Susie leaves to mourn her children Tony (Rose) Young, and Juanita (Arthur) Bennett; grandchildren Evelena (Eric) Verge, Jolena Bennett, and Angie (Peter) Taylor; great-grandchildren Logan and Hailey Taylor; special niece Patsy (Dennis) Hollett; brother Wallace (Marie) Cull; sister Betty (Harry) Oxford; sister-in-law Marjorie Cole-Perry (98 years young); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.

Susannah Laura Young was born to Jethro and Nora Cull on Indian Island, Fogo District on October 6, 1931.
They called her Susie. Second of six children, she was a great help to her parents when she wasn’t chasing her boy cousins having loads of fun. Her favourite pass-times on the island were rowing the punt, jumping fences, and throwing rocks to out-do the boys!! Her chores included housework, which she got away from by paying her sister with the 5-cent piece their uncle had given her. She also turned the hay, spread the fish, and brung in wood and water. Her least favourite task was picking bakeapples in the wet bog!

When her sister Mim called, Susie came to Wild Bight in 1952 to babysit her niece, Patsy, because Mim had a teaching position. They had a ‘Young’ man picked out for her as a bonus. They hit it off right away, fell in love, and started a little family.

Mom was a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky woman. She enjoyed life to the fullest. Scrabble was her favourite game, and she played with the best of them. June, Betty, and Roxanne were the Saturday night specials! Mom enjoyed outdoor activities as well - skidooing, spending time at the cabin, and having bonfires.

Mom was faithful to her church by playing the organ for over 55 years, never advertising her musical ability, but never turning down a request to play for services, funerals, weddings, and events.

Your work on this earth is done, Mom. Rest in the peace you deserve and we will see you later on.

Pastor L Foster will conduct the funeral service at Springdale Pentecostal Church on November 11, 2022 at 1:30 pm. Interment will be at the cemetery in Beachside.

Pallbearers are Tony Young (son), Arthur Bennett (son-in-law), Dennis Hollett (nephew), Glenn Harnum (nephew), Harry Oxford (brother-in-law), and Francis Verge (nephew).
