Obituary

VERNON JOSEPH "VERN" CAREY
1942 - 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Vernon Joseph “Vern” Carey announce his passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, on June 25, 2019 at the age of 77. Vern retired from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Hazel Carey, sister, Lorraine, and brother, Colin. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Frances, son, Bob (Denise) of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, and daughter, Cathy (Art) of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Also leaving to mourn are his grandchildren, Colin and Jessica, brothers, Neil (Ruby), Thomas (Joanne), and Angus, sisters, Annette Power, Dianne Griffin (Mike), and Ruth Hillier (Donnie), and a large circle of relatives and friends.

Vern loved his family very much. He also loved the outdoors - fishing, hunting, and his cabins, especially spending time on the Gaff Topsails and Millertown Junction. He worked with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for over 20 years, and enjoyed his job very much. Vern was an excellent bowler, and especially enjoyed his friendships he made through bowling. He had a witty personality, many friends and hobbies, including coin collecting. He fought a long, courageous battle with COPD and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Father John Agim will conduct the funeral service at Central Funeral Homes Chapel in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, on Friday, June 28, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. No flowers by request. Donations may be made in his memory to the Lionel Kelland Hospice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes.

Young Station Rd. memories are still vivid and indelible, especially surrounding those of the Carey family. Col was the impediment of sunshine, Mrs. Carey introduced tea to me at age 12; I believe I drank 5 cups. Mr. Carey painted his house; it was immediately invaded by flies; all stuck to the fresh paint. But Vern was strength in search of backbone. I still see him; arm broken from a track event, saying, " It's nothing to think about". I was younger, but I grew up seeing the raw, pure strength of Vern Carey.

Dianne, Tom and the family of Careys, I extend my sincerest sympathies.

I am so sorry to hear of Vern’s passing. We worked together at DFO in Grand Falls-Windsor and he was a special man. Vern was a wonderful storyteller and there was always lots of laughter when he was around. Oh the stories..... My condolences to the family. Carmel Pumphrey

Sorry to hear of Vern's passing. I first met Vern in 1961, when we both worked at the Co-op Meat Market in Grand Falls - such a long time ago! He was a fine colleague and I enjoyed his companionship. Rest in peace my friend! Mun Batstone

Frances, Barbara and I send our deepest sympathy to you and your family. My memory of you and Vern goes back many years when you and I worked at the Welfare Office on High St. I think it was about that time that you and Vern started dating. I remember how happy you were. I also remember how bowling was a favourite activity for us. I'm sure you have wonderful children and grandchildren to be with you. I am also remembering the great Hanlon family since we grew up in the same neighbourhood. Sincerely, Barbara and Bob Parsons
