Obituary for Mary Isabel Edwards (Griffin)

Mary Isabel Edwards (Griffin)
Mary Isabel Edwards
1935 - 2017
It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Isabel Edwards (nee Griffin) of Grand Falls, Newfoundland, announce her passing at the Carmelite House in Grand Falls, NL on May 1, 2017.
Born on May 19, 1935 in Grand Falls NL to Stanislaus and Hilda (nee Delaney) Griffin, Mary attended Notre Dame Academy and was taught by the Sisters of the Presentation Congregation. Mary was a bright and musical student. She performed in many school concerts and plays, allowing her to express her creative and dramatic flair. She studied piano to a high level, achieving her Higher Local in the Trinity College of Music Piano Examinations, an accomplishment in which she took great pride. Summers were spent in Placentia, the birthplace of her parents, Stan and Hilda.
After high school, Mary worked as a secretary for the A.N.D. Company. She married Reg in May 1957 and became a stay-at-home mother. She dedicated many years to raising and caring for their five children. Sunday drives around central Newfoundland and swimming trips to Badger Lake and Leech Brook kept five busy children out of trouble!
In 1980, she embarked on a new chapter, returning to work outside the home as secretary to the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand Falls, Most Reverend J. Faber MacDonald. She remained in this position for over 20 years, continuing as secretary to Bishop Martin Currie until her retirement. Her professionalism, dedication, and confidentiality in this role gained her much respect from the clergy, her co-workers, and members of the parish.
Mary was a lifelong faithful parishioner of Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish, contributing to her church community through her service as a reader, Liturgy Committee member, choir member, and member of the Catholic Women’s League (serving as President of the local chapter for a term). She also participated, along with Reg, in many programs and special events offered by the parish through the years. Mary’s strong faith was reflected in her years of selfless service to her church community.
Mary had a great passion and appreciation for the arts, and a great love of classical music. She attended numerous concerts and productions at the Arts and Culture Centre through the years, and looked forward with great anticipation and excitement to the Kiwanis Music Festivals, Drama Festivals, and Northcliffe Drama Club productions.
A private woman, she was an acute observer of people, possessing a sharp wit and sense of humour. Mary loved to laugh most of all. This will live in our hearts forever.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Stan and Hilda, and her brother, Peter Griffin. She will be greatly missed by her husband of almost 60 years, Reginald, and their children: Glen (Patricia) of Grand Falls, NL; Valerie (Colin Boyd) of Dartmouth, NS; Nancy (Ian Fergusson) of Dartmouth, NS; Stephanie (Brian Greening) of Hammonds Plains, NS; and Jennifer of Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS; and grandchildren, Heather Edwards, Martha Edwards-Osmond (Ryan Osmond), Alex Boyd, Connor Boyd (Kara Melendy), Griffin Boyd and Mikayla Greening; and one great grandchild, Erica Osmond. She will be especially missed by her sister, Anne Griffin, of Grand Falls.
Visitation will take place at Central Funeral Home, Union Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, on Thursday, May 4 at 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on May 5 at 11:00am at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Church Road, Grand Falls-Windsor. The family extends its sincere appreciation to the staff of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre and the Palliative Care team at the Carmelite House for their generous care and compassion. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes. Donations may be made to the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation.
