Obituary for William "Bill" Knight

William "Bill" Knight
WILLIAM “BILL” KNIGHT
1929 - 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of the late William “Bill” Knight announce his passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on December 14, 2019 at the age of 90.

William was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on October 10, 1929. Within five days from his birth, he was adopted. At the age of 14 years old, William left his family home which led to a very dynamic life in Africa and to other parts of the world. William served in World War II, representing South Africa. After the war, he transferred to Military College in Pretoria, South Africa. During his time in the Army, he was a lightweight boxer. Later, William worked for the railway in Southern Rhodesia, then onto mining in Northern Rhodesia and Uganda. Before leaving Uganda, William represented Uganda in a boxing match that could have taken him to the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, BC.

William arrived in Canada in 1954, and arrived in Newfoundland on November 5, 1956. His first home was Tilt Cove, Newfoundland. He mined in Tilt Cove and Gullbridge until their closing.

William had many passions. He loved to travel and saw many parts of the world over his lifetime. He had a great love for athleticism and participated and excelled in many sports, such as badminton, rugby, boxing, squash, soccer, curling, bowling, cycling, and was most commonly known as a great golfer. He enjoyed gardening to the fullest, and dancing many nights away. William truly enjoyed his social clubs and was dedicated to his friendships. Lastly, he had a great “eye” for detail and his wonderful photography speaks for itself.

He is predeceased by his sister-in-law, Sharon Skinner, mother-in-law, Audrey Goodyear, and father-in-law, Lloyd Goodyear. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Sandra Knight, son, Paul of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, daughters, Nadine (Paul Jewer) of Halifax, NS, and Tabetha of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Also leaving to mourn are his grandchildren, Ethan and Ella Jewer of Halifax, NS, sister-in-law, Jocelyn (James Morton) of Berwick, NS, brother-in-law, Michael Skinner of St. Thomas, ON, brother-in-law, David Goodyear (Michelle) of Bridgewater, NS, along with three nieces, three nephews, and a large circle of friends. William has a very large extended biological family that was discovered over the past year. These newly found family members who live all over the world provided peace and comfort to him.
