Catherine Lynn Alicia "Cathy" Byrne
Cathy Byrne
Catherine (Cathy) Lynn Alicia Byrne, 42, was called home to God on February 16, 2011, surrounded by her beloved parents and family at the Palliative Care Unit in the Carmelite House in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, Canada having lost a courageous battle to ovarian cancer.
For the past two years Cathy has lived in Grand Falls, enjoying independent living in her “own” apartment. From 1996-2008, Cathy lovingly helped “raise” her niece and nephew in Indianapolis. While doing this wonderful job, she was an active volunteer in the Catholic communities of St. Luke, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and St. Joan of Arc. She helped in the cafeteria, classrooms, and preschool programs where she was appreciated and loved. She participated in “Mary’s Way” at St. Luke and “CHRP” at IHM. She also volunteered her time to help teach figure skating for “Winter Club” at the Pepsi Coliseum, as well as, help mentally and physically challenged students at Carmel and Pan Am Plaza.
Cathy was active in Girl Scouts Canada, competed in ice-skating for the Special Olympics, winning a Gold medal, and most recently was honored on October 30, 2010 with the Newfoundland and Labrador Student of the Year Literacy Award.
Cathy is survived by her parents, Donald & Phyllis Byrne, beloved sister, MaDonna (Andy) Wolf and brother Mike (Christine) Byrne, cherished nieces, Megan Wolf and Megan Parker and nephews, Zach Sosna and Aaron Parker, as well as, many aunts, uncles and cousins. All will miss her.
Funeral services will be held on February 21, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cathy Byrne Memorial Scholarship Fund in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland at the College of the North Atlantic (709-292-5600) or to the Cathy Byrne Memorial Fund at St. Joan of Arc School, Indianapolis IN (317-283-1518).
