Saying goodbye to old friends is the most difficult thing in life as one ages but, at the same time, I can't help expressing my gratitude to the universe for Ed's life and the joy of being a friend for so many years. I have too many memories to choose from but I would like to share the two that stand out most in my mind:
The first time I saw Ed he was up a tree at Mount A having been obliged to climb it as a freshman during the hazing that was still allowed in those days. Marion and I were lofty sophomores and took great delight in ordering that lowly freshman to do silly things. Being a Newfoundlander through and through Ed enjoyed every moment of silly.
The second memory is bittersweet. I can still see Ed singing "Oh Lord It's Hard To Be Humble" in the hospital after his horrible accident - just to make ME laugh. Can't cry and laugh at the same time, can you?
Goodbye dear friend. You are a great man and I have been privileged to know you.
